"Trip to Stabby Town" is the eighth episode of the second season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

"After discovering that Azrael's blade has been stolen by a human, Lucifer quickly connects it with a string of violent stabbings revolving around a local yoga studio. While Chloe investigates the murders, Lucifer enlists Ella's help in locating the sword to stop the carnage."[1]

Plot[]

The episode opens with a woman riding a bike. A man in a hoodie chases her, tackles her, and stabs her to death.

Lucifer, meanwhile, is back in therapy. In Linda's office he tries work out the symbolism behind the sandwich Chloe made for him in the last episode. Linda, however, has not quite come to terms with who he actually is, and can only stare at the Devil, fascinated. Finally, she asks how Lucifer tortured men like Hitler, if there is a tyrant wing in Hell. Lucifer sighs, “I suppose it was futile of me to think that you wouldn't want to discuss the whole... 'I'm really the Devil' thing,” but he is glad he didn’t lose her friendship. Linda says that Maze gave her some clarity. Lucifer seems surprised by that, and asks if they can get back to his session. Linda tries, but instead asks if her uncle is in Hell, he was a “mean mamma-jamma.”

When Chloe and Lucifer later arrive at the crime scene, Lucifer worries that he has broken his therapist, “she's somewhere to the left of totally useless and to the right of babbling lunatic.” Dan provides exposition, the victim, Maddy, was stabbed 19 times. Ella says a nearby tourist captured the attack in a photo. Lucifer takes one look at the photo and is clearly startled, he then leaves the scene quickly.

Lucifer then takes Amenadiel and Maze into a wood where he buried Uriel. Uriel’s grave has been opened, and Azrael’s blade is gone, “I believe the weapon of the Angel of Death is in human hands....It demands to be used to... to fulfill its purpose. Humans are more malleable than we are, so it whispers in their ears, beckons to be held... it takes any reason someone might want to hurt another and amplifies it a thousandfold....Trip to stabby town...” They need to find the blade, and Amenadiel is “surprised that you would actually take a little bit of responsibility.” Lucifer responds that he thought hiding it in an unmarked grave in the middle of nowhere was hidden enough, he then tells Maze she will help because the blade can also obliterate celestial beings, including demons. So she and Amendadiel will move Uriel's body, while Lucifer calls in expert help.

Lucifer then approaches Ella for her expertise, telling her he will do a favor in kind. When she says he doesn't have to, that friends help each other, he becomes a bit uncomfortable, “Please don't ruin favors for me... I insist. Tit for tat,” but when she whispers what she wants, he bursts out, “No, no, no! Definitely not.” When she points out he insisted on tit for tat, he gives in, “You have a deal. Gosh, you're a nasty little nerd, aren't you?” Chloe spots them as Ella whispers in Lucifer's era and pauses before walking away. Lucifer then takes Ella to Uriel's now empty grave and asks her to investigate the site. She is freaked out that he has brought her to a mysterious empty grave, and he responds, “I'm asking you to have faith in me. And know that I wouldn't ask anything untoward of you.” She says he makes it hard to say no and processes a footprint and spots something that had been burned at the site. She says she will work on it.

Chloe and Lucifer go to the yoga spa where the victim worked, the discover the business is more than a little cultish, and calls they classes “the Glory Way” and was “developed by our guru, Jenson Glory.” While Chloe asks questions as to the profile they have developed, Lucifer want more detail, asking about even minor disagreement Maddy may have had with others, and when she asks him why, he responds with a quote he attributes to her. When she denies having ever said that, he casually suggests perhaps Miss Lopez had. Very casually, Chloe mentions that he has been spending a lot of time with Ella.

Ella has some news for Lucifer. She was able to re-hydrate the burnt paper they found at Lucifer's 'creepy' site, and it is a map from downtown LA to the grave site on letterhead from a local law firm. Lucifer warily asks what law firm, when it turns out to be Richards and Wheeler, he departs quickly to confront his mum, “Well, I'm thrilled, Mum, really, I am. Here you are studying law and the Kama Sutra. And drawing maps to Uriel's grave!” Charlotte is delighted one of the dozen or so maps she drew was actually used, when asked why she admitted she wanted to get his Father's attention, “I figured that if His toys started stabbing each other with a celestial blade, that maybe He might take a moment.” Lucifer points out that humans are dying, but she doesn't understand his concern, “You seem attached to these creatures, and I can't, for the life of me, figure out why.” He tells her she must willingly help him find the blade or he will send Maze over to inspire her help.

At the precinct, while Chloe chases down a lead, Dan complains that his pudding is gone, and not for the first time. When Ella greets them, Chloe asks if Dan has noticed Lucifer spending more time with the tech. Dan suspects that she might be jealous, an accusation she denies strenuously. Lucifer then arrives and Chloe throws Dan under the bus, telling Lucifer Dan has a monthly poker game. Lucifer compares his list of map holders to Chloe's list of suspects and points to Duncan Watts, the last victim's landlord. He was often upset over others taking his parking spot. Lucifer calls Amenadiel and Maze, and sends them to search to office for the blade, but blade isn’t there. When he and Chloe then arrive, Lucifer tries to change directions, but Chloe spots a bloody hand print on the studio door, inside they find Duncan’s body, along with those of almost the entire yoga class, “Seems this class took corpse pose quite literally.”

Chloe suggests Duncan killed the entire class, but Lucifer differs, “I doubt it. More likely the weapon was passed from one person to the next in a game of murderous hot potato.” When Chloe objects, Ella steps in and confirms that is probably what happened, and demonstrated with Lucifer's help, “it looks like Duncan came through the door, attacked victim number two with the same weapon used to kill Maddie Howard....Which is when he attacked victim number three. But victim number three had defensive wounds that matched skin flecks under the fingernails of number four, so I'm thinking Duncan dropped the knife... Okay, number four picked it up, right? Attacked number three, like this. Right, and then at some point, number five got involved. And so on and so on, until full yoga massacre.” Chloe points out the teacher is missing from the bodies, Jensen Glory.

Back in Linda's office, Lucifer wants to explore his mother's question; why does he care about these humans. Linda is trying her best to keep up with her new reality, but points out, “there is no listing in the DSM-5 for Azrael's Blade Anxiety.” Lucifer then gets a call, and has to leave, Jensen has been picked up. Under questioning, it turns out Jensen has been hiding because he is putting on weight and wearing a girdle.

Back at the penthouse, Maze and Amenadiel report in, saying Jensen did not have the blade in his house or vehicles. When they depart, Ella shows up, and tells Lucifer, “Tread on the shoes Duncan Watts was wearing when he was found dead. Tread that you showed me at your super weirdo hole in the ground. They match, which means that this case and your favor are connected. Start talkin', dude.” He is worried about filling her in, seeing how it freaked Linda, and asks her to indulge him for just a little bit. She considers, and agrees, “I guess faith isn't faith unless it's tested.” She gives him a hug just as Chloe arrives. Ella departs quickly and Chloe tells Lucifer that Jensen’s alibi checks out and that Corrina, Maddy's co-manager, might be the one who has the blade. Lucifer makes an intuitive leap and heads for Jensen's. When Lucifer arrives, he finds Corrina standing over Jensen’s body, the blade in his chest, but she doesn’t know what happened, and Lucifer tells her, “You got retribution for a grudge, I believe. But it wasn't an insignificant grudge, was it? Did he harass you like the others? Or was it worse than that?”

When Chloe and the police show up Lucifer says that Corrina killed Jensen in self defense, but then notices that the blade is missing. Chloe complains that it should not have been taken before being photographed, and he says, “They couldn't help themselves. Anyone else feeling a murderous urge? No? The need to slice and dice? Anyone?”

Trip to Stabby Town

Lucifer talks Dan down

He looks on the patio to find Dan wit the blade. He tries to talk the detective down, but Dan is furious claiming Lucifer broke up his marriage. Dan slashes Lucifer and then blames him for stealing his pudding. Lucifer remains calm and realizes, “You're fighting the blade, which indicates a strength I didn't know you had.” He then carefully points out Dan's marriage was on the rocks before Lucifer met Chloe, and Dan was already cutting corners at work. When Dan admits Palmetto was all him, Lucifer is able to take the blade away from him. Dan has no memory of what happened, and when asked how he feels, he feels great.

Back at the station Chloe says the blade is missing. She also says, “I thought you and I had a real moment the other day...I thought we were partners, but more importantly, friends.” He realizes she is asking about the hug with Ella, and assures her that everything he did with Ella was entirely work related. When she asks if that is true, he says always the truth, it is a point of pride for him.

Back in Linda's office, he tells her the crisis has been resolved, and she apologizes for her distraction, saying it was easier when she thought he was just delusional. He tells her he is “Just another screwed-up patient. And you can treat me as such.”

That evening, Ella gets her favor from Lucifer. She wants him to go to church with him because “since the moment we've met, okay, I've had this Spidey-sense that you were, I don't know, searching for something.” When the reluctant Lucifer spots an attractive woman going into the church, he acquiesces.

Back at the penthouse, Lucifer tells Amenadiel that he wants to keep the blade away from their mother. Charlotte arrives and complains that the carnage ended too soon to get their Father’s attention. Lucifer points out it may never have gotten his Father’s attention. Amenadiel throws in with mum, saying that the blade did not belong on Earth, that they didn't belong on Earth. That they should go home. Lucifer becomes upset, “Home. For you, maybe. Neither of you understand, do you? You never have. Hell wasn't home, and Heaven was... well... hell! The only place I've ever felt wanted or respected...This is my home! Deal with it, Mother!” Charlotte notices Azrael’s blade spontaneously flame up in Lucifer’s hand. She immediately backs down, and departs with Amenadiel, commenting that when a door closes a window opens.

Trivia[]

  • Lucifer is the one who says the title of the episode.
  • Before entering a church with Ella, Lucifer made a "blood soaked carnage" reference to his previous visit to a church on "A Priest Walks into a Bar" and his visit to an abandoned church in Weaponizer to meet Uriel.
  • According to Tom Ellis, the scene where Lucifer, Chloe and Ella checks out the next murder scene in the Glory Way was directed by Lauren German and when Ella stabs Lucifer, he placed his hand subconsciously and they kept that shot much to his surprise.
  • When Linda says “there is no listing in the DSM-5 for Azrael's Blade Anxiety,” she is referring to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The DSM is a diagnostic tool, published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and is utilized by both the psychiatric and psychological professions as an aid in the process of diagnosis.
  • Lauren German once filled Tom Ellis' trailer with all the Jensen Glory life size cutouts as a practical joke.
  • Lucifer's cover story for the rape victim isn't a lie; Glory DID attack her (in the past), so she truthfully did defend her self (respect).
  • Chloe is jealous of Ella.
  • Lucifer claims Earth as his home.
