Now I'm sure that this isn't "Our Father, Who Art in Heaven", but something much darker
– Lucifer tells Amenadiel that some new evil has arrived to replace their misguided Mum

"They're Back, Aren't They?" is the first episode of the third season of Lucifer. It aired on October 2, 2017.

Summary[]

After a confused Lucifer wakes up in the middle of the desert with his wings back, he recruits the help of Chloe to help figure out what happened to him and why. They come across a crime scene that could be tied to Lucifer's kidnapping.

Newcomer Lieutenant, Marcus Pierce, fails to make a great impression on everyone with his stern demeanor. The investigation goes awry when Lucifer finds himself in another compromising situation and something much darker is revealed.[1]

Plot[]

The episode opens with an armored car speeding down an empty desert road. Inside is someone familiar, previously he was seen trying to rob a jewelry store in “Everything's Coming up Lucifer.” He drops his gun to the floor and fishes for it. When he looks up there is a half dressed man sporting a magnificent pair of white wings in the road. He slams on the breaks and screeches to a halt, the breeze from the truck's passage ruffling the wings.

Lucifer opens the door and tries to climb in, his wings getting in the way. With an irritated grunt, he furls his wings and climbs in asking for a lift to LA. He recognizes the driver as the would be thief he left in nothing but “his manties.” The thief points the gun at Lucifer and says he needs to get out. Lucifer asks his name and is told, “Said out, bitch.” Lucifer grabs that and replies, “Mr. Said Out Bitch, tell me, what is it you really desire?” It will be Lucifer's name for the man thereafter. Lucifer makes a devil's deal, and obtains a clean cover all and the driver's seat. Mr. Said Out Bitch is next seen running through the desert in nothing but his his shoes and “manties.” Lucifer takes the truck to the police roadblock, where he toots cheerily at them before climbing down from the cab. He identifies himself and they check with LAPD to confirm his story. He says he's gotten the stolen truck back for them but, sadly, the thief has run away.

Back home, Lucifer cleans up before his guest arrives – an aide, Benjamin, pushes Linda's wheelchair into the penthouse, and withdraws. Lucifer had set up an array of wines and treats for her and she demands to know what's up. He sighs and unfurls his wings, stunning her. He complains that his Father has restored them and asks that she cut them off for him. She refuses, and asks him to think it through before he does something drastic – but she'll be happy to have Benjamin's number.

Lucifer then goes to the precinct assuming they are involved in a manhunt for him, but everything seems normal. Dan slaps him on the back in greeting, and his wince indicates he apparently managed to cut off the wings on his own. He approaches Chloe to assure her he is well, and she casually says she saw him just two days ago. He tells her he had been kidnapped then drags her off to see the crime scene.

After a march through the desert, Chloe tells him, “if this kidnapping tale is some elaborate distraction, you can just stop....You don't need to tell me anything.” When he assures her he is telling the truth she notices something – a hand sticking up from the desert floor, “I believe you.” She calls it in and the scene is processed with the cooperation of Lancaster County PD. Dan snags a key fob marked with an A found by one of their detectives and bags it.

Back at the precinct, the new station Lieutenant, Marcus Pierce, makes his entrance. He has something rude to say to everyone, stunning Chloe and Dan and amusing Lucifer. Amenadiel then arrives, and he and Lucifer step away for a private conversation. Amenadiel wants to know what happened with their mum and Lucifer's text was indecipherable; “You mean the string of nonsensical emojis? Fire, sword, doughnut, spaceman, clock, dancing lady, flashlight, thumbs up. How am I supposed to know what that means?” Lucifer is so good as to translate, “I ignited the flaming sword, used it to cut a hole in space and time, Mum's light flooded through it, then it closed up behind her. All good!” Amenadiel is deflated to learn she is gone for good, but Lucifer then tries to tie him to the kidnapping, thinking with his powers he's back to being Dad's “little bitch.” Amenadiel assures Lucifer he hasn't gotten his powers or his wings back. Lucifer finds that ironic. Ella then comes in with an update and meets Amenadiel for the first time. The dead man is Steve Banales, the co-owner of a local hotel. Chloe and Lucifer leave to talk to their his partner, Josh Hamid (Pej Vahdat). He seems amused by their presence, and unconcerned about his partner. He insults Chloe and then takes off, challenging them to catch him. When they do, he laughs, and Lucifer chucks him off the balcony into the pool.

Once down at the precinct, his humor has evaporated. He swears he does not recognize Lucifer, and that he assumed their appearance was part of his partner's practical joke, “It's why I thought you weren't real cops. I mean, a guy named Lucifer and the chick from Hot Tub Hotel?” Lucifer says she was not in the sequel, but his partner is really dead. He gives them the name of a fake kidnapping company. Chloe asks Lucifer about his kidnapping. He suggests his Father is behind it, but He is no jokester. Chloe tells him she is trying to believe him and he realizes the time has come, “once and for all, I'd like to show you who I really am.” He sits he down and tries to show her his Devil face, but nothing happens. When he tries to force it, Chloe assumes he is playing with her, “You know, I keep caring, and you... you just... just...” and she flees, even as he tries to call her back, confused about his inability to show her his face.

Meanwhile, Amenadiel arrives at the penthouse in response to a text from his brother. He is met by a sexy masseuse named Remedy. She instructs Amenadiel to remove his clothes and get under a towel. Amenadiel needs a bigger towel, and when he goes to get one, he finds his brother’s severed wings lying discarded on the floor of the dressing room.

The next step is to get the kidnappers to come to them, Chloe suggests they have someone kidnapped. Lucifer volunteers, but she is afraid they may recognize him and Pierce says they'll set up Dan. While Dan waits on a street corner for his impending kidnapping, nothing happens. At the same time, a van pulls up nearby and grabs Lucifer. Chloe receives a “Target Acquired” text message; the photo sent is clearly Lucifer giving a thumbs up despite the bag over his head.

In a dank and dripping warehouse, Lucifer calmly awaits his kidnappers, and when he hears them arrive he compliments the venue, “I have to say, the leaky pipe is a nice touch. Very Blood Simple.... Finally, I have you right where I want you. Let's see, so many questions.” He is out of restrains and wielding the cattle prod in moments. He ties them to a chair, the gangly man beneath the very, very large man. They spill everything they know, that they do not know Lucifer, that Banales was last week's client, and that “our partner Sam picked him up, took him to the spider hole for a few hours, and dropped him back off at the hotel.” They then desperately inform him of Sam's address. He thanks them and leaves.

Back at the precinct, Dan discovers the Lancaster detective who found the key chain is a fraud. They find him in the crime scene photos next to a van, and they run its plates. Sam (Michael Gladis), meanwhile, is desperately packing a bag. Lucifer arrives and shoves the door off its frame, asking if Sam remembers him. He wants to know how his Father got him involved, “Unless Dad got jiggy with some celestial babe after mum, then you're not my sibling, so... Demon. Hmm? Changeling?” Sam is terrified and confused, he says he grabbed Lucifer and was going to swap him for Banales, but when he opened the van Lucifer had wings. Frightened, he dumped Lucifer and ran. In his anger, Lucifer's wings again unfurled, “Oh, bloody hell. They're back, aren't they? How? How are you doing this? Did my Father give you some kind of totem? A talisman?” Sam asks if his father is the Sinnerman, that was who wanted Lucifer kidnapped' a scary, elusive crime boss, and because Sam failed him, he has to run. Chloe and the police arrive at that moment and take Sam into custody.

Later at the precinct, Pierce finds Chloe to tell her Sam somehow made bail. She asks how that's possible, he responds with a shrug, “You can’t win them all.”

Amenadiel and Lucifer meet in the penthouse. Lucifer shows his brother that his wings have grown back again, then asks if he has heard of someone called the Sinnerman. Lucifer initially suspects that God restored his wings as punishment for giving mum her own universe, but eventually comes to believe that it is "something darker" connected to the Sinnerman. As they talk, there is a jump cut to a scene beneath the pier; Chloe and Lucifer find Sam's body impaled on rebar protruding from broken concrete.
