Plot[]

The episode opens with a young man pleading to get into Lux to see “the big man.” He finds Lucifer inside who confirms he does grant favors when it suits him. He asks Lucifer to hear him out, he won't regret it. Lucifer invites him to sit down.

A few months later, while in session with Linda, she asks Lucifer, “so, how do you angels work? I know Amenadiel can slow time, and your other brother, Uriel, could predict patterns. So why is your gift desire?” He teases her, telling her how angels are sorted into houses for different powers in angel school, and Linda falls for it. He laughs at the absurd idea, and tells her he was joking. Linda isn’t dissuaded, “Do angels' powers shape their personalities? Or are your personalities shaped by your powers?” Lucifer doesn’t know, he just knows his power is perfect for him

At the precinct, Chloe catches Pierce getting dressed in his office. He slept on the couch after trying to catch up on work. She thanks him for saving her life, and then she requests a personal day. She doesn’t want to reveal the reason, so he says he’ll consider it. She gets angry, saying she never asks for anything and Lucifer tells her she is too low maintenance, that all people expect of her is work. She calls Pierce a jerk.

They have a body and head out to the latest crime scene, and Lucifer recognizes the victim. Chloe pulls him aside and he confirms that yes, he is still granting favors, it's what he does, and he granted one for “Joey Pileggi, he came to me a few months ago and asked me for a favor, and I granted it to him....his desire was to become the new Godfather, a Scarface for millennials.” So Lucifer got him an “apprenticeship” with the local mob, where he worked as a runner. The manner of Joey's death included the shattering of both his legs, perhaps a commentary on that position.

Back at the lab, Ella reveals that Joey's shoes are easily $1,000 a pair, he had a genuine Rolex, and $10,000 stashed under his mattress, and that mob runners don't make that kind of money. They speculate he was skimming profits, and it got him killed. Charlotte then arrives, and informs Chloe and Lucifer it is her first day with the DA's office. Lucifer is quite proud of her, and tells her it will help clear her ledger. She contributes her knowledge of mob protocols, after years of defending alleged mobsters – whoever brought Joey in, would execute him, if their theory were correct. Lucifer says that would be, “Frankie the Knife, a sweet chap.” And they decide to bring him in for questioning.

Elsewhere, Amenadiel laughs that Linda fell for his brother's angel school joke. As they chat, Maze comes in from her latest bounty hunt in Cleveland and she is now banned from Ohio. She asks whats going on, and and Linda cheerfully tells her that she and Amenadiel have been “hanging out” that they are friends. Maze studies them narrow eyed. After she leaves, both Amenadiel and Linda thought that things got weird, why shouldn't they be friends? And then he kisses her, when she pulls back, he apologizes...but then they kiss again.

When Frankie the Knife arrives in interrogation, Charlotte asks to go in with Chloe and Lucifer. Frankie greets Charlotte and asks how the kids are, but says he doesn't think he's ever met Lucifer. Charlotte tells him she is not a defense attorney any more and he can’t understand what the world is coming to. Lucifer asks if Joey was stealing from him and Frankie says he doesn’t know Joey and he doesn't know Lucifer. Irritated, the Devil uses his mojo on Frankie, who desires “to find out who killed little Joey, and I want payback.” With the dam broken, he says Joey had a bright future, he was a good kid, and they gave him everything he had, they were generous to their family. Dan enters to tell them Frankie’s alibi checks out and there is another body, two shots to the chest just like Joey.

This time, the body is a woman, hanging from the ceiling from a noose made from her own hair. Lucifer knows her, he did her a favor a few years back, “Frieda Marquez... wanted to become a hairstylist to the stars, so I made a few choice introductions, that's all.” He then tells Chloe that “The real reason I started granting favors again was because of the Sinnerman....this appears to be his way of escalating our rivalry.” She is now worried that the deaths are messages for Lucifer, but points out there is no evidence as to the existence of the Sinnerman. Pierce arrives and confirms the Sinnerman is real, but he killed for power and influence, taunting a night club owner seems small. Angry, Lucifer leaves to handle things his way.

At the penthouse, Maze arrives, and he doesn't allow her to get a word in before he asks her for help, and though he says he is interested in what she has to say, his problem is more important. Their conversation is interrupted by a call – from someone claiming to be the Sinnerman, and Lucifer ditches Maze to meet him.

At the lab, Ella tells Chloe that like Joey, Frieda died before she was arranged. Ella tells Chloe that she was able to recover the DNA from both crime scenes, which she was able to match to a Sinnerman attributed crime in Chicago, “Proving that Pierce's Sinnerman really is operating in L.A.” She updates the Lieutenant and calls Lucifer to tell him he was right. She then drafts Charlotte to accompany her to use the fact that the Sinnerman's DNA was at both scenes, and wants to use that to lean on Frankie Ferrante. Lucifer arrives at the meeting site, an abandoned slaughterhouse. He follows the dark hallways until he comes upon a freezer, when he enters, the door shuts and the Sinnerman appears on a television screen. He tells Lucifer he killed Frieda and Joey to bait him, trap him. When Lucifer says he is no mouse, the Sinnerman replies “unfortunately for you, that's a foot of reinforced steel. Takes a little extra to hold the Devil.” Unable to easily escape, Lucifer promises him, “when I find out what someone truly desires, I find out their greatest weakness. And that's not a parlor trick, Sinnerman. It's power....And I promise you I will find out what you really want, and when I do, I'm going to use it to destroy you.” Sinnerman then disconnects and leaves Lucifer alone.

Chloe tells Charlotte meet Frankie at a restaurant, Chloe asks about the Sinnerman and Frankie says they don’t know him. Charlotte says they aren't coming after him, and offers them a friend in the DA’s office but he refuses to get involved. Charlotte loses her temper, and Chloe gets her out of the meeting. Chloe is pleased her plan worked, Frankie knows he isn't their suspect and he knows who is. Because he wants revenge for Joey, Frankie will seek out the Sinnerman, and Chloe will be waiting. Chloe gets a call from Pierce, who arrives with food to join her on her stakeout of the restaurant.

Trapped for the moment, an angry Lucifer hears Maze outside, when she opens the door she says she only followed him because she wants to talk to him. She says she won’t let him out until he listens to what she says and acts like he cares. She asks if he knew Amenadiel and Linda are “a thing” because she saw them talking in her office. Lucifer points out that is literally Linda's job. Maze cedes the point. Lucifer asks why she cares, unless she is still hot for Amenadiel, and she says he’s her ex and Linda is her best friend, so she doesn't like it. Lucifer says, “So, you don't want him, but nobody else can have him, that's awfully greedy of you, Maze,” then tells her to be honest with herself about what she desires. After a moment she opens the door and thanks him, even as Lucifer dashes off.

At the stakeout, Pierce wants to know why Chloe is acting the way she is, so she asks why the case is so important to him. He says it’s a high profile case and he’s trying to impress “the suits downtown.” She says if feels personal, so he tells her that the Sinnerman killed his brother. Chloe explains she asked for the personal day because the anniversary of her father’s death was coming up. After finding her father’s killer a few months prior, she thought the pain would be over but it isn’t. He says now he has to give her the day off, then points out a new arrival, who does not look like a mobster.

Lucifer then calls and tells Chloe he just escaped capture by the Sinnerman. He describes him, “Black fellow, early 40s, though he dresses like an old man. Would you believe he wore a sweater vest? His greatest crime yet.” The description fits the man they just watched enter the restaurant. She and Pierce go after him.

Inside the restaurant, Chloe finds several gang members down with the Sinnerman aiming the gun at Frankie. She chases him in a running gun fight, but as he runs out the back door, Pierce tackles him. Pierce seems primed to kill the man, who tells Pierce to do what he needs to do. Chloe talks him down and the Sinnerman is arrested. When Lucifer arrives, he finds Chloe, who tells him that they caught the Sinnerman. Lucifer wants a word, and she tells him he will get his chance. The Sinnerman, however, hides a pen up his sleeve.

Maze, meanwhile, knocks on Linda’s door and tells her that she should have said something earlier but she felt weird about seeing her and Amenadiel so friendly. It hurt her because Linda is her best friend and it makes her feel left out, so she doesn’t want them together. Linda assures her she has nothing to worry about, and though she appears uncomfortable, she accepts Maze’s hug.

At the precinct, Dan finds Charlotte crying in the bathroom and asks if she’s okay. She says she’s fine, and explains she is trying to be a better person and she keeps making mistakes. She was better being the old version of herself but can’t be that person anymore. Dan tells her it’s hard to be good, and he makes mistakes all the time, but the key is not to quit; trying counts.

In the bullpen, Lucifer is seen quietly watching and waiting. Pierce is praised for bringing in the Sinnerman. He sees Chloe and Dan, and then what he was waiting for; he smiles when he sees the officer leave the Sinnerman’s interrogation room. The Sinnerman is alone. Lucifer moves immediately, entering the room where the Sinnerman has his back to the door, “I made you a promise: to look into your eyes and find out what the great Sinnerman desires, and then take it from him. I'm a man of my word, so let's get to it, shall we? Look at me.” The Sinnerman turns, he has gouged out his own eyes with the hidden pen, now the Devil will never know what he desires.

Trivia[]

  • The episode's title is said by Lucifer first, but is repeated by various people throughout the episode.
  • Lucifer and Linda's discussion show that Lucifer himself don't know how angel powers work.
  • Lucifer's mojo only works with eye contact. In numerous episodes such as Lucifer, Stay. Good Devil and Everything's Okay this premise is reinforced as Lucifer's mojo weakens when he breaks eye contact.
  • In the scene where Chloe and Pierce are on a stakeout, Pierce reveals that the Sinnerman killed his brother. It is later revealed that the Sinnerman is Pierce himself, and as he did kill his brother, so that statement is technically not a lie.
  • Maze mentions that she's banned from Cleveland, which is where her last bounty was. With her tone implying its not the first time her rampages have gotten her punished. Though given shes immortal, it means little to Maze as she can just go back after about 40 years as no one will believe shes the same person.
  • Linda and Amenadiel kiss in her office.
