"The Sin Bin" is the tenth episode of the third season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

"With the Sinnerman in custody, Lucifer is prepared to go to any length to get his devil face back. But, with another victim's life on the line, will Lucifer's conscience hinder or help? Meanwhile, Trixie is introduced to Charlotte and questions the relationship she has with her father."[1]

Plot[]

The episode opens with a woman running while making a desperate call to 911, saying someone is going to kill her.

Cut to Lux where Lucifer and Maze are hosting a bachelorette party. Blindfolded women take turns swinging at a pinata, and Lucifer gloats about the arrest of the Sinnerman, from whom he expects to soon be getting answers. Maze isn’t so sure, saying he can't mojo a blind guy. She also points out that if someone really wanted to hurt him, they would have taken away his life in LA; his job – Chloe. Lucifer confidently believes he can learn the Sinnerman’s weaknesses, even without using his mojo.

At the precinct, Pierce warns everyone not to meet with the Sinnerman alone. Chloe confides in Ella that Pierce’s brother was murdered by the Sinnerman, but tells Ella to keep it to herself, saying it’s not her secret to reveal. Lucifer arrives, ready to interrogate the prisoner who he has decided needs a new nickname. Marcus, however, tells Chloe and Lucifer that he is the only one who gets to talk to the Sinnerman, telling Lucifer the last time he tried to talk to the Sinnerman, the guy gouged out his own eyes. Lucifer shrugs that off as an inconvenience, “can you imagine living in L.A. and not being able to enjoy the sunset?” Chloe quietly heads into the interrogation room alone.

Chloe assures the Sinnerman they have enough to put him away. Just as the interrogation begins, Ella barges into the room with the Sinnerman’s ringing phone. Lucifer and Marcus follow her as the Sinnerman says they should answer the call. It’s a video of the screaming woman from the opening, Maggie Cole, trapped in a reservoir rapidly filling with water. Marcus demands to know who the Sinnerman is working with, and where the woman’s located. The Sinnerman reveals the woman can only survive if he shows them where she is. The team analyze the video and are certain Maggie was abducted while the Sinnerman was in custody. They are stymied in their investigation because they can’t track the phone number. Lucifer believes they should let the Sinnerman lead them to Maggie, since it is the fastest way to find her. Marcus refuses to let the Sinnerman out, however, and Lucifer tells Chloe they have to hurry up and investigate so they can get to the part where they follow his suggestion sooner.

Ella spots a design on Maggie’s shirt on her driver’s license photo; Maggie skates for the roller derby. Chloe and Lucifer head over to the roller rink and question some of Maggie’s colleagues, discovering Maggie's team name is 'The Slayer' and she had been arguing with teammate Helena Handbasket the prior day. When the pair corral Helena in the Sin Bin, or penalty box, the name of which Lucifer approves, they discover Helena said Maggie stole the spot as lead jammer she wanted for herself. Helena does, however, have an alibi. Lucifer still thinks letting the Sinnerman lead them to Maggie is the best idea, so he gleefully hurries Chloe on.

Meanwhile, Dan is working on finding a babysitter for Trixie who has the day off school, when Charlotte arrives. Dan introduces her as a colleague and friend. Trixie decides Charlotte is okay, especially when the attorney complimented her poker face. She then floats a new idea for Dan and Charlotte.

Chloe and Lucifer continue the hunt for Maggie’s car, following Helena's information. When they locate it, Lucifer’s impatience sets off a booby trap, a grenade explodes, and the car goes up in flames. Back at the station, Chloe explains the trap was rigged to make sure there wasn’t any remaining trace evidence. She admits it is time to allow the Sinnerman to lead them to Maggie. Lucifer is surprised, “not what I was expecting, but... thank you, Detective, for finally seeing things my way.” Despite elaborate plans to keep Pierce out of the loop, he already has figured it out. Marcus won’t let them go without him.

At Charlotte’s office, she is playing babysitter. Trixie asks about Charlotte’s kids and she explains her ex has custody, and her kids don’t want to see her. Trixie reminds Charlotte that she’s the mom and she makes the rules.

Pierce, Chloe, and Lucifer lead the Sinnerman through the woods. Lucifer wonders why Pierce is helping them, and the Lieutenant admits it is the best way to find Maggie. He does, however, believe this is an ambush, and that they will be attacked by the Sinnerman’s accomplice. When they hear Maggie screaming, Pierce and Chloe are able to save her before she drowns, but when take their eyes off Lucifer and the Sinnerman, the pair vanish. Chloe assumes the accomplice has taken Lucifer.

Backup and an ambulance arrive, and before Maggie’s taken away Chloe and Marcus ask her for everything she knows. She explains she was thrown in a van and the man was wearing a mask. When Chloe mentions that it sounds like it happened fast and wonders when he rigged the car with explosives, Maggie gives herself away by mentioning the grenade. Chloe never said there was a grenade, forcing Maggie to admit she made everything up. She abducted herself because she wanted to be her team’s jammer. She went to the Sinnerman because he grants favors and he made her fake her kidnapping in exchange for taking out her competition. Chloe then figures out it was Lucifer who has actually kidnapped the Sinnerman.

The Sinnerman comes to, and Lucifer mocks him, drawing large eyes on the white bandage across his face. When asked where they are, Lucifer replies, “I save my Hills estate for...only very special occasions. My very own 'sin bin,' if you will.” The Sinnerman says he won’t tell Lucifer anything, with the devil ironically replying, “You will talk. And you will give me what I want: wings off, devil face back! Because no one decides who I am but me!” The Sinnerman mocks Lucifer in turn and Lucifer then introduces him to “Hell’s most brutal torturer,” but even Maze, gets nowhere, “I've pushed that guy to his limit. Anything else might kill him.” Lucifer then wonders why he can't kill the Sinnerman, despite his Father's rule against killing mortals, perhaps it's exactly what he needs to do.

Back at the precinct, the team try and figure out where Lucifer would have taken the Sinnerman. Dan has a file full of Lucifer’s real estate holdings, and explains he only has them because he once checked up on Chloe's new partner, due diligence. There are over a dozen properties, some hours away, but Chloe figures out the right one immediately. She knows they are at the Hills estate, “He said, 'Imagine living in L.A. and not being able to enjoy the sunset.' I mean, just like Lucifer to bring a blind man to the place with the best view.”

Maze and Lucifer continue to argue, meanwhile, over whether Lucifer can kill a human. Maze reminds him that Amenadiel lost his powers and although she is a “big fan of death and destruction, but kill a human is Angel No-No's 101. Look at your brother... total power loss, and he only got murder adjacent.” That is precisely the point Lucifer was trying to make, “If I kill a human, then I lose my wings! And, because I've been such a naughty angel, I get my devil face back, and, bonus! I rid humanity of our sightless psychopath.” Maze reminds Lucifer his Father will be pissed since the Sinnerman was, according to their theory, Sinnerman was doing His bidding. Lucifer counters with, “If I don't stop this now, who knows what else he'll do...or who he might take from me.” That gets through to Maze and she hands over her blade. She tells him to get in touch when the deed is done, but then laughs and says she will be able to tell by the plague of locusts.

Lucifer approaches the Sinnerman, listing hideous ways to kill a man, but has no real notion of actually accomplishing the act, finally berating the man, “Honestly! Can you at least try to look threatening?” The Sinnerman taunts Lucifer who although angered, realizes he actually doesn't seem to be capable of killing a human, and admits it. The Sinnerman's pose shatters, and he becomes almost desperate, “No, wait! You have to do it!” Lucifer then realizes that he was the trap, “You never wanted freedom. Your true desire was to die, and for some reason, you need me to do it.” He is finally getting his answers, and demands to know why. Pierce bursts in at that moment, and shoots the Sinnerman dead. Lucifer doesn't get that last answer.

As the Sinnerman’s body is removed, Pierce tells Chloe he believes this is the only way it could have ended. Chloe then goes to see Lucifer, who tells her, “I actually wasn't the one in danger...it turns out I was the pawn...It was the Sinnerman's plan to be snatched by me all along. He wanted to die.” Chloe is furious with him, however, and accuses him of going off on his own even when she said she had his back, and he had to go behind hers.

Dan returns to Charlotte's to pick up Trixie. She has given Charlotte a hairdo to match her own. Dan asks Charlotte for coffee, but Trixie suggests dinner would be more romantic. As they leave, Dan tells Trixie she’s the best wing man ever. After they leave, Charlotte calls her ex and says she wants to see her kids.

Still pensive, Lucifer reviews all of the Sinnerman evidence. Ella, however, races out of the room to fangirl Pierce on the wrap of the case. Pierce shouts at Ella, “Lopez, just stop talking!” crushing her. Lucifer spots a photo in evidence of a young Sinnerman. He is being embraced by someone whose head is not in the shot – but his arm, bearing an unusual mark, is.

That evening, Lucifer invites Pierce over for a one-on-one meeting. Lucifer points to the photo, “it occurred to me that, what if the Sinnerman was the one working for someone else? What if he was the accomplice? Exhibit A. Here is Mr. Sinnerman as a child with a man that he seems very close to. Interesting birthmark. It's a very similar shape to your military tattoo, actually, wouldn't you agree?” He then goes on to say the man in the photo would have to be quite old now...or immortal. He then leans over the bar pulls out a knife and stabs Pierce through the heart.

Pierce collapses, obviously the wound was fatal, and Lucifer has a drink, occasionally glancing at the body. After a minute, Pierce gasps and comes around, pulling the blade out of his chest. Lucifer says, “I wonder why I didn’t figure it out sooner? The world’s first murderer, marked by God and doomed to walk the earth alone for a tortured eternity. It’s quite the moniker. Still, nowhere near as ridiculous as the Sinnerman. Wouldn’t you agree... Cain?”

Pierce blots the wound and asks for a drink.
