"The Last Heartbreak" is the eighteenth episode of the third season of Lucifer.
Summary[]
"As Chloe and Lucifer go on the hunt for a serial killer targeting couples in love, Pierce realizes the case is connected to a murder he previously solved...in 1958. Then, Lucifer becomes upset when Pierce has a change of heart about an important decision."[1]
Plot[]
The episode opens with a flashback, Pierce sits in a booth in a tavern, looking over crime scene photos. He looks up as another officer enters; his partner. They discuss the case he is working, which she calls the “Broken Hearts Killer,” who is operating in 1958 LA. He tells her to stop calling it that, “you never know when something stupid like that's gonna stick.
In the present, Lucifer and Ella watch as Chloe talks with Pierce in his office. Is it chemistry between them? Is it a flash in the pan? Lucifer struggles to convince himself that nothing is changing between him and Chloe, while Ella is becoming a cheerleader for Pierce. In the office, Chloe is delighted when Pierce asks her on another date. Apparently their concert outing in Let Pinhead Sing went very well. Things are interrupted as Dan brings word of a murder.
At the crime scene, they look over a couple left dead in a car. Ella gives a preliminary cause of death: they were drugged and their chests were crushed. Pierce tells the group about the “Broken Hearts Killer” from the 1950s, the MO seems identical; “In the 50s, there was a guy named Clark Hoffman. He was known for making his victims swallow their wedding rings. By the time they caught him, he'd killed seven cheating couples in L.A. His crime scenes were about as gruesome as this.”
Amenadiel, meanwhile, runs into Charlotte Richards at a coffee shop and makes the mistake of calling her mom. Charlotte is understandably confused and concerned. But since he had dropped Lucifer's name, and she knows Lucifer she demands more information. He says he made a mistake and walks away. He heads over to Linda's office to tell her Charlotte is back, and she informs him she is treating the woman. She tells him Charlotte is fragile and the best thing he can do is stay away from her.
Later, Chloe, Lucifer and Pierce interrogate the spouse of one of the victims. Pierce and Chloe think the woman is innocent, Lucifer isn’t so sure. While they discuss the details, Dan brings word of another double murder. The second crime scene is the same, an unfaithful pair left with their chests crushed in a motel room. They appear to have a copy-cat serial killer on their hands. How is the killer picking his victims? They never knew how the original had done so.
Dan takes some time to take Trixie to the apartment where they find Maze has been sleeping with a band, the members of which are strewn about the place, one even sleeping in Trixie's bed. Dan tells Maze that such behavior when sharing a home with a 9 year old is not okay, and asks if she's going through something, she says just the band.
Pierce decides to check surveillance footage for the motel much further back than the day of the crime, and finds a Neil Berger, former schoolteacher, snapping photos of the place, and puts out an APB. They find the man taking pics of the original killer's house. When they arrive at the scene, Berger assumes they are there to take his Broken Hearts Killer crime scene tour. That seems like a good idea, so the police follow him on his guided tour of 70 year old crime scenes, hoping that Berger will incriminate himself for the new killings. When he praises the copy-cat for attention to detail, details not released to the public, they take him in for questioning. They were just around the corner from the bar in the flashbacks. Pierce steps inside and sees the same table he used to frequent. A waitress steps out from the kitchen and Pierce looks stunned, she looks like the same woman he knew in 1958. The woman, however, is the grand-daughter of the waitress Pierce used to chat with. Her grandfather - Pierce’s then partner - closed the original Broken Hearts Killer case. Pierce finds that his old friends had died just a few years ago, but that he had kept copies of the case files. He asks to take a look.
Under questioning, Berger proves to be thrilled to be part of the investigation. He isn't the killer, just an obsessive who illegally obtained crime scene photos from Officer McMillan in vice for $400.
Dan, meanwhile, returns to the apartment to confront Maze. The brownies she gave Trixie to take to school for Teacher Appreciation were laced with weed and it badly affected the 70 year old teacher. Maze is unrepentant, and Dan tells her that if she wants to live in a house with his daughter, stuff like that cannot happen. Maze angrily replies, “I'll move out since none of you want me here anyway....you would all love me to be something I'm not. Well, I am not a babysitter, I am not a roommate, and I am sick of your Goody Two-shoes ex-wife, and that stupid little brat of yours anyway.” Trixie overhears this and flees, weeping. Now Maze looks remorseful.
Pierce calls Chloe and she meets him to take a look at the old files. They discover the only connection between the original victims; “call logs; they prove that the original killer's victims all had spouses that called into the Dear Dottie radio show... a radio show about love and relationship advice.” So they manufacture an undercover sting on Chance's Chocolates radio show which also exposes cheating spouses. Since any addresses are censored over the air, they reason that the killer might be someone who works for the show. Pierce casts Lucifer as the “jilted lover” and himself and Chloe as the cheaters.
In the surveillance van, Dan and Lucifer talk about relationships, and inside Pierce's house, he and Chloe talk relationships as they wait for the killer. When Lucifer spots a shadowy figure, he and Dan apprehend the delivery boy who works the radio station – he stole all the interviews and posted them on his website without censoring the addresses, anyone could be listening to them.
Distracted, no one sees the shadowy figure pumping gas in through the back door of the house, while inside, Pierce says he's willing to try a relationship with Chloe. Chloe is suddenly overcome and faints. Pierce jumps to his feet, but then collapses next to her. The killer enters, and pulls Chloe into position for the kill. Lucifer is right behind him, however, “Too bad. If you'd started with him, I would've let you swing.” He recognizes the killer as the owner of the original killer's house, the man argues that he was going to kill them for Lucifer, they betrayed him. Lucifer is appalled, “I didn't ask for this! You don't get to decide who someone wants to be with! And neither do I.”
Later that night, Lucifer calls on Chloe at home and apologizes for his behavior, “I've realized that there's room in your life for all sorts of relationships, even if one of them is with him.” She invites him to stay, but he has a prior engagement. After he leaves, she calls and makes a date with Pierce who says she is the key to getting what he has always wanted.
