Plot[]

The episode opens in mum's office, where Chet’s burned body still lies smoking on her floor. Mum is busy stapling the wound Chet inflicted shut. Unsure how to properly dispose of a corpse by herself, she picks up the phone, “I need a favor.”

Meanwhile, back at the penthouse, Lucifer and Amenadiel are still amazed the key to the flaming sword had been with them all along. Amenadiel grins delightedly, repeating that he is the “favorite son” at last feeling the validation he’s long desired. Lucifer doesn’t see it that way, however, this must be another of Dad's manipulations. Amenadiel doesn't want to give his brother the key until he processes, an exasperated Lucifer offers him a pint of Haagen-Daz.

As Linda arrives at her office, she is startled for find Lucifer's mum there. She demands that as Linda knows what she is, Linda must patch her up. Linda points out that isn't her thing, but mum respond with emphasis, “Oh, it is now.” Linda decides the safest option is to “take a gander.” Unfortunately, the divine light that erupts from the wound nearly takes her out, and burns a hole in the wall. “Who did that to you? I mean, was it Lucifer? I mean... Not on purpose, you know. Accidentally, like with that Flaming Sword thingy!” A flustered Linda deals with the goddess using the universal fix all – duct tape.

Meanwhile, Lucifer talks with Chloe on their way to the next crime scene, “You have experience with emotionally fragile men…” Chloe smiles, “You’re self-aware today.” He clarifies that he meant Dan, and wants to know how to get his brother to stop overthinking, he should be glad he's the favorite. She stops and asks if their Father really said that to them. When he confirms, she looks sympathetic, “the more I hear about your Dad, the more I understand why you're... you know...you.”

The victim is an unusual one, Ella tells them, “Body dump. Weird one, too, and not just 'cause of the obvious buck naked, deep-fried head thing. But someone also shaved this poor guy's entire body....I'm pretty sure this guy got a bath in bleach.”

After wrapping up the crime scene, Lucifer visits Linda and finds Charlotte there. After spotting the burned wall he demands an explanation. She tells him how Chet had stabbed her and the body dumped in the warehouse is Chet. He points out that Chloe is “annoyingly good”, at her job and will figure things out. Mum claims a professional cleaned up the mess, and that it's no big deal, Lucifer thinks otherwise, “That's a huge deal. Mum, if your powers are returning to this degree, then your human body won't be able to contain it, you'll burst!”

Lucifer head over to Chloe's apartment to find Maze who is serving as patient for young Dr. Trixie. He takes a seat and the 'doctor' begins treatment while he speaks with Maze. He needs the best bounty hunter he knows to find his missing brother while he deals with Chloe. She agrees but standard rates apply.

At the precinct, Chloe informs Hector Ruiz that the dumped body was his brother. Chet, and promises to work the case as fairly and carefully as she would any other. In the lab, Lucifer tries to tamper with evidence but learns that there is nothing from the Ruiz scene. He then gives her the idea to check satellite images, and much to his chagrin, it gives them a lead.

Meanwhile, Amenadiel speaks to Dan while trying out improve to sort our his issues, but it just doesn't seem to be working for him. Maze easily finds Amenadiel as he leaves the improv theater. He says he is not ready to deliver the pieces of the flaming sword, after all, his Father entrusted him with it. Maze doesn't care to listen and tases him.

Lucifer and Chloe track down the van seen in the satellite images Ella found and discover the Lyon sisters, licensed crime scene cleaners. As Lucifer tries to divert the investigation off avenues that might lead to his mum, Chloe gets fed up and tells him she thought they were past hiding things from one another, that going backward wasn't good for either of them.

Arriving at the penthouse Lucifer meets Maze and Amenadiel, but his brother does not have the sword piece on him. Lucifer finally admits he had no intention of trying to destroy their Father, “Yes, I want to assemble the sword, yes, I want to cut through the gates, blah, blah, but then I was just going to kick mum into Heaven and slam the gates behind her. Let the two lovebirds torture each other for eternity.” Amenadiel doesn't think that is much better and his reinvigorated loyalty to Dad has him believing he was meant to guard the piece. Lucifer points out mum's human body can no longer contain her and she has to go. Maze then informs the pair that mum has already disappeared.

Mum has apparently gone to see Linda, wine in hand, and demands to know what she meant when she asked if Lucifer had been the one to wound her. Linda tries to dissemble, but mum wants answers.

Chloe is called to the scene of another body – Ava Lyon. When questioning her sister, Kathleen, it transpires she had been offered $1000,000 to clean up Chet's body. Ava had known nothing of it. But the she decides her sister's death is a warning, and refuses to say anything more. Chloe calls Lucifer catching him up and asking for his help, but when mum shows up at Lux, he disconnects and tries to deal with the immediate problem. The brothers try to speak to mum, who is furious they have kept her in the dark. When Lucifer asks how she learned of his plan, she tell him she approached Linda. He is instantly worried about Linda's safety, but mum demands the piece and then throws her sons across the room when they refuse. She heads out to find the piece on her own.

Chloe and Dan follow the clues to Charlotte at the Santa Monica Pier. She promises not to resist and to tell Chloe everything she wants to know, but first must call Lucifer. She obliquely warns him she has Chloe and dozens of other innocents around her. She then kisses Dan and tells him he was her favorite human and follows Chloe out onto the pier. Desperately worried, Lucifer calls Amenadiel, “She's on Santa Monica Pier, and she wants the piece. We have to give it to her, Amenadiel. We've run out of options. Please, Brother, please, she has Chloe.”

Meanwhile, Maze arrives at Linda's office, only to find a bloody doorknob. Maze bursts in and finds Linda lying in her own blood, and badly injured. She is still alive, but only just. Amenadiel then arrives and he says if they try to move her she will die. Maze cries that they need more time.

Back at the pier, Lucifer searches Dan for the missing piece. Chloe questions Charlotte, who admits she was involved in Chet's death, but “not in the way you think,” but she had nothing to do with Ava Lyon's death. Lucifer then arrives and says he has the piece and mum can let Chloe go. When Chloe tells him he cannot protect his mother any more, he replies it is her he is trying to protect. As the stand off seems imminent, Hector Ruiz (Marcus Coloma) arrives, gun out. He thanks Chloe for her fair investigation and then tells her he must avenge his family. Lucifer tries to point out that if he shoots Charlotte they all die. Hector then sees Dan approaching and fires his weapon.

Lucifer looks about astonished, and realizes his brother has slowed time. He takes mum’s hand and they jump on to the beach. Once he regains his feet, he ignites the flaming sword and turns on his mother, “I'm sorry, mum, but I'm afraid that this ends now. You've hurt so many people, mum. It has to stop.” He looks heart-broken as he again tells he he is not leaving, and that what she want's is not what she needs, “Going home? That's not starting over, that's... That's going backwards. And that's not good for anyone. So it's time for you to move forward, mum, even if it means I'll never see you again.”

He swings the flaming sword, cutting a a rent in reality. It seems the flaming sword can cut through anything, even the world. He tells her to start over, that if she remains there will be a war and with war there are always casualties. That finally gets through to her, she does not want to hurt her children. She tells him she will miss him, and Lucifer watches as his mother's light leaves Charlotte's body and projects into the void. As the light goes out, Charlotte’s body drops into the sand. Lucifer removes the key from the flaming sword and tosses the blade of death into the void just as it closes.

Time resumes and up on the pier, Hector is shot, and Dan spots the pair on the sand. He rushes to Charlotte's side, and Lucifer is about to tell him she didn't make it when she sits up. Charlotte Richards has returned and does not know any of them. Across town, Linda has been safely transported to a hospital.

That evening, Lucifer sits at Linda’s bedside, deeply remorseful, “This is my fault. I should never have got you involved in any of this from the start.” Linda assures him she walked into the situation with her eyes open, she knew she was dealing with the most powerful, most dysfunctional family in the universe, that she chose to be his friend and take what came with that, “The good, the bad and the crispy.”

As he leaves the hospital he phones Chloe, he’s ready to tell her everything, “I want to tell you everything, no more going backwards.” As he smiles to himself, it's clear he's feeling good about his decision. That is when someone hits him from behind and he is, surprisingly, knocked out. He comes to wearing noting but his trousers in the middle of the desert. He is apparently suffering from exposure, his skin burned and flaking, his lips are chapped. He gets to his feet, and it can then be seen that his wings are back, unfurled in all their glory.

Trivia[]

  • The episode title is said by Linda.
  • This episode marked Amenadiel's final deliberate use of his chronokenesis.
    • Michael later exploits Amenadiel's fear in "Spoiler Alert" to reactivate it.
  • In the scene where Trixie plays doctor with Maze and Lucifer, she refuses to give him a lollipop, saying "wusses don't get any". This is a callback to Manly Whatnots, where Chloe called Lucifer "wuss" following his joke of being crippled after she shot him.
  • Goddess departs for a Void to create a new universe of her own. Lucifer throws two pieces of the Flaming Sword in with her in order to keep it forever apart.
    • In "Nothing Lasts Forever", Goddess briefly returns to the universe after Lucifer sends Gabriel to give her a message. It's revealed that had she ended up creating her own universe that includes centaurs in the Void that Lucifer had sent her into. In addition, Gabriel steals the Flaming Sword back.
  • Charlotte Richards is resurrected when Goddess leaves this universe. However, it's unclear if it was a side effect of her departure or if Goddess resurrected her vessel as her final act before departure with her newly-restored powers.
  • Lucifer's wings are restored. He eventually realizes that this and the disappearance of his Devil Face comes from his feeling good about himself following his saving of his mother and his decision to come clean with Chloe.

Goofs[]

  • When Lucifer wakes up in the desert, he seems to have wounds and burns. As an angel, he isn't supposed to have any unless Chloe was nearby, which was clearly impossible at the time.
  • Chloe incorrectly concludes that Hector killed his brother, Chet, even though minutes previously Charlotte admitted to being "involved" in Chet's death, and Hector appearing looking "to make it right" for his family.
  • Anya's death is a major plot hole. Goddess didn't kill her and beither did Hector. And why would she be killed? The Lyon sisters dont kill; they remove and clean up crime scenes. So thats WAY overkill.
