"Quintessential Deckerstar" is the twenty-third episode of the third season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

When Lucifer and Chloe investigate the death of a woman, they discover that they may be pursuing the wrong suspect. Then, Charlotte risks her safety when she decides to take matters into her own hands, and just as Lucifer makes a huge confession, she gets a tragic phone call that changes everything.[2]

Plot[]

The episode opens with a dream, Charlotte's dream. At first it's bliss, Dan and Charlotte wake and get up to make breakfast with her children. But then the door bursts open and a gunman enters, his face morphs, and it's another shooter, someone else Charlotte defended who she feels guilty about. It's a dream of the Hell Loop Charlotte once described to Linda.

Speaking of... Lucifer is in a session, feeling more confident because Chloe rejected Pierce and things can get back to normal. Linda suggests perhaps Lucifer should “do” normal, not just say it, which he takes in exactly the wrong way, and leaves with plans to reset things to how they had been with Chloe, rather than deal with them as they are.

At a crime scene in a upscale house, Chloe and Ella are working, but Chloe hears someone playing piano. Downstairs she finds Lucifer trying to recreate the scene where they first met. Chloe tries to call him to task, but he lights up a joint, just as he did in their second investigation together. Chloe isn't playing. She finds a bullet casing under the table. Time for real work, no time to indulge Lucifer.

At the precinct, Charlotte stops dead as she enters to see baseball player, Forest Clay coming in, it was his house that was the crime scene and his wife was the victim. Charlotte becomes convinced Clay is the killer, “13 years ago, I was an associate at Wheeler Law, I'd only been there for a few months when my boss...shows at my place in the middle of the night. He handed me a duffel bag. Told me simply to incinerate it; he said it was for an important client; Forrest Clay...There was dried blood on the outside of that bag.” She was convinced she had helped cover up a murder. Her wild supposition seems less wild when Ella discovers Clay received a cut on his head from something sharp, not a pistol whipping as claimed. Confronted, Clay admits he wasn’t actually home at the time of the murder, he was with his mistress.

Meanwhile, Pierce is dealing with Maze in the aftermath of the failure of their plans. Pierce wonders that if perhaps he kills Amenadiel, he can get his mark back. He enlists Maze to assist him in setting up her ex. While Dan pays Charlotte a visit, Maze tracks down Amenadiel in the parking garage below Charlotte’s office. She tries the weepy female act, and he pulls the demon into a hug. As they embrace, she’s prepared to drug him. When he tells her, “I’ll always be there for you,” she feels a twinge of conscious and does nothing.

Charlotte, meanwhile, enlists Amenadiel to help her gather some evidence, and she distracts her old law partner while the angel, posing as a potential client, uses her old pass word to download Clay's files.

Chloe and Lucifer approach the victim's business partner and learn of a man, AJ Agholor, who may have been a stalker. They learn AJ was recently released from prison, according to Charlotte, for a murder he didn’t commit. Under interrogation, he recounts a story about Joanne Foles , a woman now dead and tied to Clay. He did kill Clay's wife, but he had been after Clay. Charlotte finds the report on Joanne, “24-year-old found strangled in a motel; no way the timing is coincidence. Forest killed that woman, and the proof of it was in that duffel bag.”

Dan, meanwhile, shows Chloe and Lucifer the waffle maker he has purchased for Charlotte. When their lack of enthusiasm for the gift is obvious, he shows them a waffle charm bracelet, which Lucifer declares weird but a better option. Chloe suggests Lucifer is not the last word in knowing what women want.

The files Charlotte obtained show, “nondisclosure agreements; Forest Clay and 14 different women spanning two decades... 300, 400 grand a pop, I mean, no one spends that kind of money unless they're trying to cover up something really bad.” The last woman listed was just a week previous. She is who they need to talk to.

Lucifer continues to try and push Chloe back into how things used to be between them, but she tells him maybe she can't do “normal” any more, normal just hurts right now, and she sends him home. The next morning, an over-caffeinated, sleep deprived Chloe talks with Ella; she realizes that “I don't think any of this is really about Pierce. I think if I'm honest with myself, all of this is about Lucifer. Lucifer is the reason that I said yes to Pierce, and he's also the reason that I said no.” She decides she must focus on the case.

Meanwhile, Maze confronts Pierce and tells him she is out, “I decided you were wrong, killing Amenadiel won't get your mark back. God isn't a drive-through, you can't just order what you want.” When he says he will do it himself, they fight. Just when it seems like the demon has the upper hand, Pierce plunges a needle into her neck, and she goes down.

Charlotte and Chloe approach Clay's latest mistress about setting up a sting. Charlotte then confronts Clay in his home with what she now knows about his activities. When Mia and Chloe then enter, he pulls Mia in front of him as a shield, a blade to her neck. Mia asks if Chloe got enough of a confession, and she replies they have recorded everything. Clay is led away in handcuffs. Lucifer had witnessed the whole thing from the balcony, and left without speaking to Chloe.

Amenadiel meets Charlotte on a bench overlooking the city, and speak of their small victories. He tells her she has helped a lot of women by putting Clay away. She hears a click of a gun in the darkness, and instinctively throws herself in front of Amenadiel, taking two shots to the stomach. She falls onto Amenadiel who cradles her in his arms, asking why she did such a thing. She asks that he stay with her, and he promises he will. She tells him she cheated death once, twice would be asking too much.

Back at the penthouse, Chloe arrives to speak with Lucifer. He congratulates her solving the case without him, and says he now realizes she didn't need him – she chose to work with him. He tells her he was afraid to tell her how he really felt because if she knew the other side of him - the monstrous side - she would run away, “Chloe, I am the devil”. She gently caresses his cheek, “You aren’t, not to me.” They kiss, but are interrupted by her phone and she says she will turn it off, but when she sees who its from she apologizes and takes it. Tears well in her eyes and Lucifer asks what is wrong.

Amenadiel holds Charlotte, and weeps as the life fades from her eyes. As he composes himself, his wings, fully feathered and magnificent, unfurl, and he lifts his friend, “Let’s go home,” and the he flies into the night.

Arriving late to the scene, Chloe and Lucifer emerge from her car, to find Charlotte’s body. An emotional Dan follows close behind. He sobs over Charlotte's body, while Chloe and Lucifer embrace, promising to be there for the other.

Lucifer notices something, however, he walks a few paces away and picks up a steel grey feather. He casts his gaze upward.
