"Orange Is the New Maze" is the nineteenth episode of the third season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

"When Maze is the prime suspect in a murder, Lucifer and Chloe enter the world of bounty hunting to investigate. Maze decides she wants to go back to Hell, but after Lucifer refuses, she turns to Pierce for help. Meanwhile, Charlotte's sanity is questioned when she makes a big discovery and Chloe admits she's dating someone."[1]

Plot[]

The episode opens with Maze tearing through her kitchen. She throws utensils in anger, barely missing Lucifer’s head with a spatula. She grabs a case of coconut water, and says it was worth coming back for, you can't find that stuff in hell, “I am so done, Lucifer. I am done with this apartment, all humans... Earth, in general. I want out. Now. I want to go home,” and demands he fly her there. He refuses, “last time I took someone on a celestial Uber ride, the Detective almost died.”

She pauses as Chloe enters, but the detective is baffled as Maze quickly storms out. Clearly, she’s not in the mood to talk. While Lucifer is unhappy as Pierce enters behind Chloe. Chloe says there was...a beach murder. Chloe and Lucifer then respond to the scene of an actual beach murder. Ella is already on scene, and Chloe looks through footage from a site security camera. Ella realizes Lucifer isn't doing well with the Chloe-Pierce dynamic, “Let it all out, buddy,” even if she thinks they are “totally hot” together. Chloe interrupts, she found something. They review the security footage, stunned as Maze retrieves her knife from the body and looks straight at the camera.

Across town, Charlotte is in session with Linda, and describes meeting Amenadiel. Charlotte laughs nervously; how could she have a grown son? Would she really go around marrying men then suddenly forgetting about them? Linda knows exactly who approached Charlotte, and suggests he might not have her best interests in mind. Charlotte thinks she should look into his crazy claims.

Back at the precinct, Chloe and Lucifer look over the case notes on the deceased, Mike Biltz. It seems that the victim was an ex con, there was an open bounty on him, and Maze was the hunter of record. Furthermore, she’s taken him in once before. Chloe and Lucifer head out to investigate the winery where the man worked. There they are told that a “hot woman” in leather had been looking for Mike Back at the precinct, the team poses the question; would anyone be shocked to find that Maze was guilty. Opinion is divided when Maze enters, “Let me settle it for you, I did it!” She waits to be handcuffed, and with Maze in custody, she is taken to interrogation, as they talk, it becomes clear that Maze isn’t the killer. Lucifer decides despite being irritating, Maze must be exonerated, “we can't punish the innocent, or even the usually guilty but innocent this one time. It's the principle of the matter.”

Pierce pulls Chloe aside and tries to drive another wedge between her and Lucifer, asking if she is “letting your feelings for Lucifer get between you and me?” When she says they are friends, he asks if all friends give each other jewelry, and points out the spent bullet pendant Lucifer had given her for her birthday. At the same time Charlotte corners Lucifer and asks him to confirm what Amenadiel told her, he tries to waffle, but finally caves and tells her, “I suppose you do deserve to know the truth. Okay, then, no sense dillydallying. I really am the Devil. My brother, Amenadiel, is a former angel. That time you thought you survived being stabbed by your junior associate, you didn't. You died, and your soul went straight to Hell. Your empty body became a vessel for my real mum, the goddess of all creation, until her celestial light started bursting out of your midsection. Naturally, I sent her to another universe so she wouldn't destroy this one. Once she vacated your body, you, Charlotte, came back to life. All right? There we are; all caught up. You wanted the truth? Well, there it is.”

Ella goes to see Maze in holding, and is thrilled when the demon asks for a hug. Ella then tells Chloe that the only prints found on the coconut water can found at the scene had Chloe's prints on it. Lucifer assumes who ever is framing Maze stole it out of Chloe's trash. Maze. meanwhile. escaped from holding and goes down to the file room with the ID she stole from Ella. There she gets the name of the bail bondsman who had bailed Mike out. Chloe points out that “in order to frame Maze, someone had to convince her to go to the crime scene, you know, make her think that she was tracking a normal bounty. That's where she found Mike Biltz dead, with a knife in his chest... And pulled it out. ... And since Barry the bondsman hired Maze to find Mike, he's probably the one who set her up or he probably knows who.”

Maze tracks the bail bondsman and starts to question him, and he gives her Sebastian Corp. Before he can elaborate, someone plays sniper and puts a bullet through the man's head. Maze hadn't expected that.

Lucifer and Chloe decide to go through Maze's past bounties to see if they can turn up anything, the interviews have the pair of them giggling over Maze's antics, and Pierce watching from observation is irritated at the obvious bond between them. Dan shrugs and tells him, “All I know is that they have a real connection. They're a package deal now.” Pierce voices the opinion that Lucifer could be got rid of. The last of the interviews, gives them a new lead – a connection back to the winery.

Chloe and Lucifer head back to Monte De Oro Winery in hopes of stopping Maze from actually killing someone this time. They are a few steps behind her, however, the demon is already inside looking for a victim; “Lady, you framed the wrong demon!” As she confronts Margo Channing, the owner, she learns that she was indeed framed. It seems Margo blames Maze for her son's death in prison, the prison Maze put him in. Maze throws up her hands, “You blame me? Sure, why not? Sebastian's a saint, you're the perfect mom, and I'm just the big, bad, evil demon.”

Chloe arrives to stop Maze from killing Margo, tells her that Trixie loves her, that she is a good friend and she wants to help. Maze is near tears, and says scathingly that Chloe is the reason Lucifer won't take her home. She drops the knife and it goes through Margo's foot. Maze leaves the woman to Chloe and slams out.

Back at Lux, the celestial brothers have invited Charlotte for a chat. Lucifer asks Amenadiel if he is sure they should do this. When Charlotte suggests she is about to check herself into a “loony bin” they move forward, apologizing to Charlotte for dropping celestial bombs on her without any tangible proof. Lucifer then unfurls his wings. As she stares, stunned, Amenadiel laments, “Oh, no, Luci, we've broken her.” But Charlotte seems better, knowing the truth is preferable to thinking herself crazy.

Lucifer then moves on the other brush fire that is Maze and apologizes, “I thought you were manipulating me, but, well, I'm a big enough devil to admit when I'm wrong. Anyway, killer caught, Demon exonerated. All good now?” She says it all just proved to her that she should go home, “Feelings suck. I am not the one who's supposed to be tortured.” Lucifer agrees, but says he can't lose her too. She thinks she is just his consolation prize, that no one puts her first, and angrily tells him that none of them deserve her before storming off. She is later approached by Pierce at the bus station where she has purchased a ticket out of town, “we should work together for a change....I don't like you either, but at least I won't pretend to be your friend... I can help us both get what we want.”

Trivia[]

  • The episode's title is said by Lucifer.
  • In the scene where Lucifer and Chloe are driving to a winery as Lucifer speaks ill of Pierce, he mentions Pierce's age to insult him. Ironically, as an angel, Lucifer is billions of years older than Cain.
  • Maze is shown to be far kinder than everyone believes. All her previous bounties explain that despite her predilection for knives and breaking bones, Maze ends up giving them advice on how to turn their lives around.
  • As a subtle joke, it's brought up again that Maze doesn't understand Cantonese. One of her ex bounties, who was only speaking Cantonese, tried explaining he was no longer an active bounty, but she couldn't understand him.
  • This is the last time Chloe wears the bullet necklace Lucifer gave her for her birthday until Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!. She doesn't wear it while they are at odds in Season 4.
  • Charlotte Richards is brought into the celestial's circle by Lucifer and Amenadiel.

Goofs[]

  • When Lucifer bends the barrel of a rifle using both of his hands, the point of the bend means Zack has to be as strong as Lucifer, or else he wouldn't be able to hang on to it. A more "realistic" approach would be for the barrel to bend between Lucifer's hands.[2][3]
