Summary[]

"When Chloe and Lucifer's investigation into the murder of a diamond thief points to one of Ella's brothers as the main suspect, Ella is driven to prove her brother's innocence and recruits an unlikely ally. Meanwhile, Linda is upset when Charlotte comes to her for help and Detective Pierce hashes out his issues with Amenadiel."[1]

Plot[]

The episode opens with a man passing in to a secure office to face another man over a desk who then opens a case full of diamonds. The moment is interrupted by a phone, “I said no phones!” He assures the client that it's just his sister, but an LAPD phone number flashes on the screen, making the client nervous. The first man, now revealed to be Jay Lopez, says his sister is in forensics, not a cop. Said sister, Ella, is at the other end of the call complaining about having to leave a voice mail.

Elsewhere, Lucifer informs Cain that he wants to study his Mark, so that he may try and understand the curse itself. Cain tells him it is a waste of time, he has studied it extensively over the millennia and gotten nothing. Lucifer finally decides to ask Amenadiel's opinion because he is “the brainy one,” sure that he will help since they have grown much closer.

Ella, unable to track down he brother, goes to Chloe's place to talk to Maze. Mazikeen is giving blade lessons to Trixie, “Trix, sever their Achilles first. If they can't walk, they can't betray you.” Ella tells Maze she will pay her to help locate her missing brother. Maze agrees and taps her sources to find out about Jay's meeting the previous night. She and Ella, who she is still calling Ellen, arrive at diamond dealer, Fahrid Nassar's office, only to find the dealer dead and Jay missing. Maze helpfully points out Jay may well be the killer.

Meanwhile, Lucifer and Amenadiel squabble when Amenadiel flatly refuses to help Lucifer with Cain, “God cursed Cain because he killed his own brother, and you want to remove that curse, which God placed on him for a very good reason. Does that even sound like something that I would help you do?” He says that their Father didn't want him to understand the mark, but Lucifer suggested perhaps it was why He had sent Amenadiel, “I thought we were getting along. I thought we were... well, brothers, for once.” Amenadiel assures him that they are, but insists that if Lucifer is his test, than he has to protect his brother from himself. Lucifer says he gave his word, but Amenadiel is unmoved.

Chloe and Lucifer are called to the crime scene Maze and Ella discovered. Maze has found Jay's wallet in the corner, and Ella happily points out that the blood spatter evidence exonerates jay since it indicates a left handed killer. Chloe suggests that Ella is too close to make the call, while Lucifer says that brother cannot be trusted and they should track the murderous Jay down immediately. Chloe is willing to investigate both scenarios.

In Linda's office, she sits, obviously uncomfortable, across from Charlotte Richards who has apparently come on another client's recommendation, “Lucifer mentioned that you worked wonders with him. I mean, you see someone who calls himself the Devil, so anything I say can't sound too crazy, right?” She barely gets out another sentence before Linda jumps to her feet, cuts her off, and tells her she cannot help, and Charlotte needs to leave. Charlotte believes she is beyond help, and sadly departs.

As the investigation continues, the detectives discover Fahrid Nassar is an international diamond salesman, hence finding a stray diamond in his office, and him hiring a diamond authenticator such as Jay Lopez. The one diamond in evidence, however, is found to have been stolen from a shop in Beverly Hills for whom Nassar was a broker. This begs the question, was Nassar a thief, or associated with a thief from the store; so Chloe and Lucifer head to Beverly Hills to scope out the shop.

Once inside, Chloe notes that the security cameras are not new, and should have recorded any supposed previous robbery, so goes into bridezilla mode, telling the staff she and Lucifer where there to buy a ring, because they're engaged. She comments on the color and clarity of the inventory. She produces the stone from Nassar's office and say she had been given it for Valentine's Day, “I didn't know that my future husband was that cheap,” insulting Lucifer to his core.

The clerk examines the stone and recognizes it as stolen, he moves to call the police, when the manager stops him. She’ll handle this. Chloe and Lucifer quickly uncover what the manager was hiding, she and Nassar stole from the shop in an insurance scam, “Fahrid was supposed to sell the diamonds back to us after he cleaned them,” and although she desires to punch every millennial in the face for crashing her industry, she is not the killer.

Still tracking her bounty, Maze with Ella in tow, visit a skid row hotel. After Maze “persuades” the clerk to show them the register, Ella spots the name Michael Knight – the lead character in Jay's favorite TV show. He is there. They break into his room, and are attacked by a man in a hoodie. Maze puts the assailant into a headlock, and Ella recognizes her brother. Lucifer, meanwhile, responds to an urgent text from Linda, arriving at her office where she tells him that Charlotte Richards had come to see her. He is pleased that she took his advice, but Linda is aghast, why would he send Charlotte to her? He tells her she is the best, but Linda is traumatized, saying Charlotte had tried to kill her and as soon as she saw the woman, all those terrors came rushing back. Lucifer is sympathetic but tells her gently, “Doctor, my mother is gone. Charlotte Richards has done nothing to you. She's just an innocent woman who needs help.”

At the precinct, Dan has tracked down Don Zeikel, the insurance adjuster who covers the shop that was robbed by Nassar. He thanks them for confirming the fraud, saying that they usually just pay out because it's practically an untraceable crime if the thieves have a cleaner who can replace the microscopic serial numbers on the diamonds. This tidbit gets Chloe thinking that Jay may be involved after all.

In Lux, Pierce has arrived to talk to Amenadiel. He tells the angel “do you have any idea how annoying it is to be an immortal human being? You see, first you get to watch everyone you love die, over and over. And that sucks. And on top of that, it's boring. I've been everywhere there is to go. Tried every kind of food, sex, music. Nothing surprises me anymore.... It's been a literal Hell on Earth.” Amenadiel thinks the punishment fits the crime, but Pierce thinks it's a bit harsh, and since a favorite son would have been the one God trusted to place that Mark, then the favorite son could damn well remove it. Amenadiel admits to placing the mark, but he has no idea how to remove it. Pierce believes him, but he want to beat him down anyway, and throws a punch. The fallen angel and the immortal human battle each other in the middle of Lux. When Amenadiel tries to call a halt, Pierce says he won't let a little death stop him, and the battle continues.

Jay, meanwhile, insists he didn't kill anyone, that he had worked with Nassar before and was simply hired to authenticate some stones. He claims he was in the bathroom when he heard the shot that killed the dealer. Chloe then calls and Ella lies to her, she hasn't found Jay. Chloe and Lucifer immediately know she is lying, and speculate where she might take him...where else but to the crime scene to prove him innocent. Ella does indeed take her brother back to the crime scene, where she has him talk her through what he says happened, and discovers he could not possibly have seen what he claims form the bathroom. Maze wants to know where the stash room is, any good diamond thief would have one. They discover it just as they are interrupted by the arrival of Chloe and Lucifer. Chloe asks if he was cleaning the diamonds and he admits to it, pulling a gun, he says he is not the killer. Ella steps between him and Chloe allowing him to escape. Ella begs Maze to go after Jay, but the demon is uninterested, “You mean the brother who forged diamonds, pulled a gun on us, probably killed a guy, and who's definitely been lying to you all this time?” Chloe suggests that maybe Jay hadn't lied about everything, perhaps he did see the real killer from the stash room. Ella repeats Jays assertion that the killer wore red wingtips and a mask.

Jay heads right to the killer, Don Zeikel, having heard from Nassar where he was staying. He demands that the killer confess, as Jay doesn't want to take the blame. Jay is an amateur crook, and Don gets the gun from him and tells him he will let him live long enough to clean the diamonds.

Back at Lux, Pierce and Amenadiel are still fighting. Amenadiel tells Pierce to accept the punishment as what he deserves, Pierce scornfully points out another being who plotted to kill his own brother. Amanadiel insists they are nothing alike, and Pierce agrees, “Yeah, you're right. At least I had the balls to do it myself, you pawned the task off on someone else, you're worse. And if this is the punishment that I get for my crimes, what do you deserve?” Amenadiel throws him aver the railing to be impaled below. Meanwhile, Ella attempts to save her brother, having tracked him to Don's hotel. Ella notes Don is left handed, just as she deduced the killer would be. Apparently Nassar and Don had worked the same fraud for years and split the money, when Don had been cut out, he killed his partner. When he then says Ella has to die too, a blade sinks into his chest, and he collapses, leaving both Lopezes alive. Ella tells Chloe it was just a random blade out of no where any one could have thrown it. Chloe reminds her that Maze is her roomie and she recognizes the blade, but she was just saving Ella. She also says Jay is okay because intent is not a crime. The only thing is, no diamonds have yet been found.

That evening, Linda visits Charlotte in her office. The therapist apologies for her behavior. Charlotte realizes she must have hurt Linda during her lost time, but Linda says it wasn't her, and she would like to help if she can – for both their sakes. But she just has to check one thing, and quickly stabs Charlotte with a thumb tack to make sure she bleeds hemoglobin. She breaths a sigh of relief at the sight of the blood.

Lucifer, meanwhile, awaits Jay, knowing he was coming to retrieve the stolen diamonds. He knew that Jays protestations of this cleaning job being the only time were a ruse, “It seems you're not quite as virtuous as your sister would like to believe.” Jay tries playing the put upon brother, the one his whole family dumps on, taps for cash, and looks to. Lucifer sagely adds that the Armani suit eases some of his pain. When Jay asks if he is going to tell Ella, Lucifer says no, and that Jay isn't either, then spine chillingly adds, “Miss Lopez puts a lot of faith in you, and losing that faith would hurt her, and I won't allow that to happen.... No need to promise, Jay Lopez, because I'll be watching you, and if you ever disappoint her again, I'll come for you.”

Back at Lux, Lucifer walks in to find his club a wreck and a bloody Amenadiel slumped in a booth, he tells Lucifer he wouldn't help remove the mark even if he could because it is supposed to be there and that “working with him will only incur Father’s wrath.” Lucifer laughs, and points out that is the bloody point. Lucifer tries being reasonable, “Look, I know... you're just being a good older brother, trying to protect me, 'cause you think I need protecting...I am grateful, Brother, truly, I am, but I don't need protecting.….all I'm saying is that if you continue to meddle, Amenadiel, then you will be in my way.” Amenadiel nods, and says that he will be in the way then.
