The Would-Be Prince of Darkness is the third episode of the first season of Lucifer. It aired on February 8, 2016.

Summary[]

When a 22-year-old superstar quarterback wakes up to find a dead girl floating in his swimming pool, he turns to Lucifer for help. Lucifer then enlists Chloe to investigate the case, which leads to the world of big money sports and people who will kill to be number one.

Plot[]

A distraught woman steps on a ledge, Lucifer appears behind her and encourages her to jump, saying that it would be a warm welcome. When asking whether or not it would hurt, he says that there is only one way to find out. She jumps and it is revealed that they are at a party and the girl has leapt from the height into a pool. Wine glass in hand, Lucifer strolls through the crowd and expresses surprise when the host refuses to join in the merry making despite at a charming young woman's request. She leaves and Lucifer introduced himself to his host, Ty, who recognizes him as the favor-granting club owner, but declines his help.

Lucifer tells him that he is fascinated by Ty's virginity despite his status as a star quarterback in LA, "I'm not criticizing, I'm fascinated. I mean, do you know how rare you are? A celebrity virgin in Los Angeles, and surrounded by temptation. I mean, you, Ty, are like a four-leaf clover and a unicorn made a baby. Without having sex, of course." Ty replies that his agent wanted him to throw the party and "loosen up". Lucifer asks what he desires - skipping morning workout, chilling on the couch and watching Master Chef - which Lucifer declares boring. Ty finally admits, "I want to get laid so damn bad." Lucifer points out the woman from earlier, but Ty refuses again, bringing up his mother, which disgusts Lucifer. The devil tells Ty that it is about him and what he wants, "carpe diem."

Lucifer then sees the woman who jumped in pool and introduces himself. She refused to believe him to be the club owner, saying she saw Lucifer Morningstar in a "Rap Battle" in the Valley, his "beats were sick." Lucifer is astounded, "Every single part of that sentence horrifies me." She then dismissed him telling him he was sad for pretending to be someone he isn't and using a "fake" accent. Lucifer immediately finds solace in the arms of several other girls.

103 Lucifer with three women

Just another night's work for the Prince of Darkness.

The following morning, sleeping bodies are scattered throughout the house. Ty frantically wakes Lucifer who is sleeping in a scantily clad pile of girls. He tells the devil he needs that favor - something really bad has happened.

At home, Chloe Decker searches for articles on "debunking hypnotism". Trixie asked whether Dan forgot to pick her up, but Chloe says he is probably stuck in traffic. Trixie wants to know what Chloe is doing, and she responds she wants to figure out how Lucifer does things she can't explain. When Trixie proposes just asking Lucifer, Chloe says a good magician won't reveal his secrets and that she has to find out on her own. When her phone rings, she is shocked that Lucifer knew her phone number. He asks her to Ty's mansion and escorts her to the mysterious dead woman floating in the swimming pool.

103 body in pool

Lucifer leads Chloe to the body.

The police begin investigating the murder, and Ty is not much help, claiming he didn't remember more than the victim's name; "Ali". Chloe was displeased that Lucifer used her as his personal police contact, and his interference with evidence. When she asked him for his alibi, Lucifer gestured to the girls he slept with. After Ty, Chloe, and Lucifer look over some photos from the party, Chloe drags Lucifer out of the house and leaves him amongst the rest of the witnesses, telling him to stay until he had something to offer.

103 Lucifer shows Chloe the sex tape

"Looks like they did a lot more than talk."

As Chloe sorts through possible evidence with no success, Dan arrives and apologizes for his no-show. With no ID matching the victim, Chloe found a purse with a car key that led to a car with the victims matching ID; Alison Thornton. CSI then finds the victim's missing fake fingernail in Ty's bedroom. Chloe then finds Lucifer back inside, watching what turns out to be a sex video of Ty and Ali on her phone. Chloe stops him from deleting the video and reaches the point where Ty found out Ali was recording their tryst. Ignoring Lucifer's protests, Chloe accuses Ty of murdering Ali and orders him to be arrested. Ty angrily blamed Lucifer, saying he wishes they never met.

Lucifer is adamant that Ty did not kill Ali, while Chloe insists maintaining his reputation was motivation enough, especially since he lied about his relationship with Ali. Lucifer tries to investigate further, but Chloe forcefully dismisses him.

103 Lucifer at Lux

Lucifer doesn't like Zany Wings.

Back at Lux, an amused Maze tells Lucifer she had a call from Financial Investigations Unit about acts of destruction and dine-and-dash in his name. Lucifer indignantly claims such things were beneath him, "Do I look like I'd eat a Zany Wing? Someone is clearly masquerading as me! Rap battles and hot wings? You need to find this cheap knockoff and make him suffer, do you understand?" Maze counters that she found this human interesting and is eager to see what he will do next, and laughs at the thought of Lucifer eating Zany Wings.

103 Lucifer complains to Linda

Lucifer is outraged.

Lucifer next visits Linda Martin, where he rants about his impostor. She sees the imposter has really gotten under Lucifer's skin, and says she handled a similar problem with not much issue and that his overreaction may have something to do with his frustration over Ty's case. He says he punishes the guilty, and Ty isn't.

Chloe tries to reach Ty's agent but the receptionist says she needs an appointment. She is then distracted by the sight of Lucifer chatting with some of the agency suits. Chloe attempts to make him leave but he refuses, so she reluctantly allows him to come along to see the agent, Joe Hanson.

103 Debra obsessed with Ty

Debra is obsessed with Ty.

Hanson said Ty wouldn't kill anyone, but refuses to answer Chloe's further questions. Lucifer uses his mojo on Hanson while Chloe watches carefully, the agent says he wants to be the greatest, and he had to protect his clients. Hanson tries to strike a deal, saying he will tell them everything as long as they check out Debra McCall, Ty's ex.

103 Lucifer Chloe car 4

"Apart from the whole Noah thing, and that was a one-off."

He admits to hiring Ali Thornton to have sex with Ty, not to change his image but to help him get over his ex, who was a crazy fan. Ty had refused to break up with her despite Hanson's requests after she became overly possessive. Hanson then got him to file a restraining order after she turned violent.

103 Debra's car explodes

Debra's car explodes.

While staking out Debra, Chloe briefly talks about Lucifer's interest to find the killer, "Is it because you pushed him towards Ali at the party?" They accost Debra who didn't want anything to do with them, and as she heads toward her car, it blew up.

They discovered it was a remote detonation, Chloe said it was a scare rather than kill her. Debra admitted she went to Ty's party - or rather, looked in from outside, and was upset to see him kissing another girl, but this led to her alibi: she was weeping and eating at a frozen yogurt place for three hours, that included the time of Ali's murder. Dan suggests a Ronnie Hillman - a long-time shady Hollywood fixer, spotted on the scene - may have rigged the car, but she would never talk to cops. They arrange for Lucifer to vouch for Dan to get an opportunity to arrest her, "Am I up for encouraging someone to commit a nefarious act? Mm, let me think. Put me in, Coach." Lucifer meets Ronnie at Lux and tells her someone else needs her assistance, she assumes it is his issue with the impostor. After a moment's thought, Lucifer runs with it, and makes arrangements for her to bring him the imposter and she leaves without the planned intro to Dan, "Just sit tight and we'll all get what we want."

Ronnie returns the following day with "The Would-Be Prince of Darkness" dragging him in to Lux blindfolded. The impostor did not look or sound much like Lucifer, but boldly claims he is Lucifer Morningstar. Lucifer is less than amused, "Are you now? Well... you've certainly been a busy bee, haven't you, 'Lucifer?' Apparently, you've started a modeling agency, pitched a Web series. And I hear you've also been very active with the women... It seems you're a bit of a two-pump chump....Well, we can't have you running around cheapening the Lucifer brand, now, can we? What do you say, Maze? Impalement?"

Freaked, the impostor admits he only pretended to be Lucifer to get women and free drinks, and that his name is Justin from Sherman Oaks. Lucifer is incensed and says he will destroy him, but hesitates when Maze says that it's almost like he's punishing himself. He then tells Justin to leave, to Maze's disappointment. Lucifer then apologizes to Ronnie, as the cops enter and arrest her. She denies killing Ali, accusing Debra. Ronnie says she had been working with Ali, that Ty's agent hired her to blackmail Ty, which Lucifer found odd. He realizes Chloe thinks Hanson killed Ali, but she said they didn't have any proof. Chloe reasoned that since he painted Debra as the killer, he must know she went to the party.

103 Lucifer throws Joe

"Did I squeeze too hard?"

At a meeting, Joe boasts about the agency protecting Ty from bad publicity. Chloe and Lucifer enter and Chloe says she needs Ty for more questioning, promoting Hanson to admit he was at the party. Ty is confused that his own agent would plan to blackmail him with the sex video, but realizes it is because he had one meeting with another agency. Joe says that Ty was too important to him. Lucifer suggests Ali didn't want to give him the video, and Hanson admitted she said Ty was a good guy, and she didn't want to go through with the plan. Hanson claims he only wanted her phone but "squeezed too hard." When he then moved to walk away, an enraged Lucifer pushed him through a window, "Did I squeeze too hard?" Chloe manages to calm him down and arrest Hanson.

Ty said he wasn't planning to leave Hanson before, and thanked Lucifer for staying true to the deal. Debra came running out of the crowd and they reconciled. Lucifer willingly shares the credit with Chloe, "Come on, admit it... we solved this one together. Or are you too egotistical to acknowledge my help?" She agrees that he did help and he can stop blaming himself.

103 video Lucifer throwing Joe

At their next therapy/sex session, Lucifer tells Linda he did not to punish Justin, that his rage towards his imposter was displaced from the right culprit not being punished for Ali's death. Linda says she thinks he came to LA to reinvent himself. Lucifer scoffs, and says he likes to punish bad people, but Linda pointed out he was starting to like getting justice for good people as well.

The episode closes as Chloe repeatedly looked at a recording of Lucifer shoving Hanson through the window.
