– Linda, advising Lucifer to stop bottling his hurt

"Deceptive Little Parasite" is the fifteenth episode of the second season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

"When it is discovered that the flaming sword is the only hope for the family returning home safely, the pressure is on for Lucifer to control what he has never been able to control before – his emotions – in order to ignite it. Meanwhile, Chloe wants to air some emotions of her own, but when a therapist and head of admissions at a prestigious private school turns up dead, the team must get to the bottom of it."[1]

Plot[]

After Charlotte assures her sons that Azrael’s Blade is what they need to return to Heaven, Lucifer punches a hole in a wall and retrieves the blade from its hiding place. Lucifer says it’s rather small and not flaming. Lucifer is told he can make the flames appear, she told he had done so when he was angry, so Amenadiel punches his brother in the face. Charlotte stops the incipient fight, telling them they need to work together; Lucifer must learn to control his emotions for this to work.

Lucifer tells Linda his mother's plan, that they’re going to use the Flaming Sword to cut through the gates of Heaven. She tells him emotions can’t be controlled, that he’s created walls and until he brings them down, she can’t help him.

The following morning, Chloe forgot to make breakfast, which leaves Maze incredulous and wondering what’s wrong with her roommate. Chloe can’t believe Maze cares about her feelings, and she admits she’s upset with Lucifer getting married. Maze admits she can’t deal with human emotions before she has breakfast.

The new case is Debbie Lang, the head of admissions at a prestigious private elementary school. Ella confirms Debbie was stabbed in the back, Chloe points out a pair of ceremonial scissors is missing from a framed plaque, and are probably the murder weapon. Debbie’s boss, Murray, calls her the heart and soul of the Starford Academy. Lucifer's attention is engaged when Murray explains the school focuses on emotional self-control, and Lucifer says, “Let the schooling begin!”

Lucifer asks how long it takes for the students to gain emotional self-control. When Murray says parents notice it in just one class, Lucifer checks out brochures while Murray answers Chloe’s questions about Debbie. Murray says that doesn’t happen at this school, but then he remembers a recent incident in which Debbie got into a vicious verbal fight with parents denied entry. Chloe pulls in the parents whose child was denied enrollment and they admit saying they’d kill her while arguing with Debbie. Debbie had implied if they gave a big donation, their son would get in. They were angry when he wasn’t admitted after they gave money and when Debbie said the money was not received. She asks the parents why the murder weapon was recovered in their pool house and they are stunned.

At Lux, Lucifer sits at the bar studying the children’s book, “Your Feelings and You.” Three women show up claiming to be police officers, ready to place him under arrest. He realizes his mother is up to something, and calls her out. She admits she tried to choose women who look like Chloe in an attempt to incite a different emotion that might spark the Flaming Sword, “A foursome isn’t an emotion, Mum.” Lucifer returns to his reading, assuring mum he’ll eventually be able to control his emotions. When she tells him he’d understand her rush to return home if he had a child, Lucifer has an epiphany. He needs a child.

Lucifer appears at Chloe’s who tells him she believes the murder weapon was planted, and that maybe somebody at the school embezzled the missing donation. She notices Trixie isn’t ready for school and she’ll miss the bus. Lucifer steps in and volunteers to take Trixie to school, and Trixie is fine with that. He takes her Starford Academy which is a school, just not Trixie's school. Lucifer tells her to play along and she’ll get whatever she wants. A smiling Trixie then introduces herself to the school’s representative as Trixie Morningstar, while Lucifer smiles, proud of her duplicitousness.

Trixie takes Lucifer's hand as they follow the tour guide, Lucifer quietly asks Trixie if they have to touch, asking if maybe there’s a leash they could use instead. Trixie asks if he wants to sell this or not, and Lucifer gives in and continues to hold her hand for the moment. He wants to see where students go to harness their emotions, the teacher giving the tour, knows where to take them.

Meanwhile, Dan and Chloe visit Murray again and he confesses to cashing the check. He was feeling pressure to live up to the standards at Starford and his paycheck wasn’t cutting it. He tries to blame Debbie’s death on the parents who made the donation, and when Dan tells him they’re not sure that couple are the murderers, Murray asks them to disregard his confession about the money.

The tour teacher walks in on the meeting and when Chloe introduces herself, he tells her Trixie’s a great kid. Chloe is stumped and asks how he knows Trixie, and he explains Trixie’s dad brought her in and she’s in Madison’s class right now. Dan, says he's pretty sure that was wrong, and Chloe steps out to find out what Lucifer’s up to.

Trixie and Lucifer are sitting in on Madison’s class, the lesson has to do with bad feelings being harnessed into good actions, and when she asks for someone to share their thoughts, he makes Trixie raise her hand. Chloe stands at the back of the class and listens as Trixie confesses she feels sad because her mom almost died. Trixie knows her mom helps lots of people and so she doesn’t want her to worry about her. Lucifer welcomes her to the club of parental deceit, it’s the price you pay for being clever. Madison then says Trixie could channel her feelings into something like writing a poem. Lucifer is less than impressed, “A poem?! I came here to learn how to turn emotions into energy, not to become Dr. Seuss.”

The boy seated next to him draws a picture he says is of his mom stabbing Debbie. Chloe makes herself known and Lucifer, defensive, he points out that he solved the case even if he did kidnap Trixie. Trixie tells her mom not to be mad at Lucifer, taking the blame. Chloe tells Trixie she can talk to her anytime about anything, and what Trixie really wants is to ride with Lucifer to her real school. Chloe agrees and Trixie runs to Lucifer’s car. Chloe tells Lucifer he’s lucky Trixie likes him and Lucifer responds, “I’m starting to respect the deceptive little parasite.” Lucifer tosses the keys to Trixie as she gets behind the wheel. Chloe immediately says no, and Lucifer whispers to Trixie that driving lessons will have to wait until her mom is not around.

After dropping off Trixie, Lucifer parks in an underground lot and is immediately attacked by a hooded figure. The person has super strength and tosses him around, and he’s shocked to discover it’s Mum trying to make him afraid for his life to get the blade fired up. He says to trust him, that he’s dealing with it, and he doesn’t understand why this is so urgent.

Back at the precinct, Chloe receives an invitation to visit Starford because they’re considering admitting Trixie. Dan calls the place pretentious and can’t believe she’s considering it, but she explains Trixie’s opening up after just one morning there. Dan agrees they can discuss it after the murder investigation is solved. They interview Joy, the mother of the boy who drew a picture, and she admits she said she wanted to kill Debbie, but didn’t. Chloe asks for her alibi and she says she was with the PE teacher. It’s a standing date on Tuesday nights. Joy suggests they attend the Grieving Gathering to find more suspects.

Chloe’s anxious about her outfit for the gathering and Maze is impressed she’s making such an effort. The woman checking parents in at the Grieving Gathering is very condescending when Chloe checks in alone. Out of nowhere, Maze joins her and says they’re together. The attitude of the woman immediately changes as she approves the trendy two mommies. Maze admits she didn’t want Chloe to go into enemy territory by herself. Chloe thanks her, and they check out the crowd. Maze points out all these parents are miserable gossips, so Chloe says they should give them something to talk about. Maze confides in another parent, telling him they think the killer might be at the gathering, and there is evidence in Chloe's car. He immediately spreads the word, whispering to his fellow gossips. The news of an impending arrest spreads and Chloe and Maze watch it make its way through the parents and staff.

Meanwhile, at the penthouse, Amenadiel is trying to get the blade to flame with no luck. Lucifer complains that Amenadiel could have warned him about their mother’s super-strength. Amenadiel counters Lucifer always plays victim, reminding him he’s the Light Bringer. Lucifer says he is not sure that’s true since they have only their mother’s word on it. He also wonders what’s wrong with mum because she’s obviously on edge and is obsessed with getting home.

At the school, Madison is seen trying to break into Chloe’s car. She’s about to throw a rock through the driver’s window when Lucifer arrives and figures out she wants something from Chloe’s car. He unlocks it with his own remote but asks her not to tell Chloe he has one.

Chloe then arrives and asks Lucifer what he’s up to. He explains Madison’s in the car looking for something and Chloe says she’s the killer. Madison emerges from the car with Chloe’s gun, which she points at them. It seems Madison’s one-night stand with the randy but dumb PE teacher years ago resulted in a son who takes after his dad in the brains department. Since Madison’s husband is intelligent, Debbie figured out the PE teacher was the real father and was going to out the them (for seemingly no other reason than to be a jerk).

Chloe convinces Madison to put down the gun. Madison says she tried to control her anger but couldn’t, and Lucifer realizes her class on controlling your emotions thing was just a sham. Not caring the threat is over, Maze tackles Madison, “Listening to feelings is not my thing.”

Back at Chloe’s, Trixie is tucked in bed and Chloe tells her it’s okay to pretend, but she doesn’t want Trixie to ever have to pretend with her. Trixie admits she didn’t like the school, and then Chloe admits she didn’t like it either.

In session, Lucifer tells Linda she was right about feelings, and he comes clean with his real plan. He’s going to use the Flaming Sword to open the gates of Heaven. Then, he’ll push his mom through and slam them shut after her. She’ll be trapped, and he hopes his mom and dad will then torture each other for eternity. He stops himself from voicing exactly what he feels, and Linda suggests he needs to let himself feel that pain and heartbreak, it is what he’s been suppressing, he must go through the pain in order to get past it.

Lucifer meets with mum and Amenadiel back at the penthouse, telling them he believes he knows how to make the blade flame. He stares at the blade without speaking and it ignites in his hand. Amenadiel is delighted, and then stunned when he looks at Lucifer who is now weeping, and then the blade goes out. He staggers and Mum tells him to try harder, “I’m not broken. The sword must be,” he insists.

Amenadiel says they have plenty of time to work on it and Charlotte agrees, but once she is in the elevator and out of sight of her sons, Charlotte peels back a bandage on her wrist. It exposes a cut through which an intense light shines, and she mutters that she is running out of time.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • Lucifer is the one who says the title in the episode.
  • The schools motto is “Sentio Ergo Sum” which when translated from the Latin can be interpreted as, “I feel therefore I am”.
  • Amenadiel shows his new found brotherly bond with Lucifer again; quickly coming to his aid when Lucifer was in anguish from letting his pain flow to light the sword, showing that even if he is desperate to get back to Heaven, causing his brother to suffer isn't worth it.
  • This episode is one of Lucifer's biggest steps in healing and accepting himself, by finally allowing his pent up pain out; allowing his deeper emotions to no longer be stagnated. His next big steps would come in "Anything Pierce Can Do I Can Do Better" and then in "Super Bad Boyfriend"/"Save Lucifer"
  • Maze mentions Chloe dressing from clothing found on the floor, the Goddess will also make a similar comment in "Sympathy for the Goddess."
  • The victim, Debbie, didn't get a lot of sympathy from the school staff; apparently being a notorious jerk.
    • She didn't seem to have any real reason to reveal Madison's husband wasn't her son's biological father; Madison mentioned having tried to dissuade her, but Debbie wouldn't relent.
