Only a truly broken soul would betroth himself to that! ...and I'm the one who broke him.
– Goddess, realizing Lucifer snapped

"Candy Morningstar" is the fourteenth episode of the second season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

After Chloe's near-death, Lucifer has gone off the grid for two weeks, cutting off all contact from his family and the police department. He materializes just in time to help solve an up-and-coming guitarist's murder and introduces the department to a ditzy stripper named Candy... a new mystery woman in his life. While Lucifer's mom desperately tries to contact her son, Chloe tries to push him away. Lucifer must find a way to prove himself in order to be invited back onto the team.[2] Lucifer's mom realizes she may have found a way to finally get them back to Heaven. In the end of the episode we discover that Candy was just an actress and was granting Lucifer a favor. She tells him to not to screw up the thing he has with The detective [3].

Plot[]

Mum is making out with a young man in Lux, while she complains about not being treated fairly, and eventually reveals that it is her son she is talking about. The young man is a little freaked by this, and leaves her. Maze arrives and rather gleefully says, "Must suck to be on the outs with Lucifer. He hates it when people manipulate him."

Lucifer, meanwhile, is sitting opposite two shady looking men. A briefcase is lying on the desk between them. Lucifer drops a duffel bag on the desk. The man says, "This is a big move, man. Are you sure about this? It's not gonna go cheap." Lucifer replies, "Oh, yes. Now hand it over."

Dan and Chloe, meanwhile, arrive a crime scene and Dan asks about Lucifer's absence. Chloe replies, "I went by his place. It's completely packed up… No e-mails, no calls, nothing. He's gone. Just... it is what it is," and asks Dan to change the subject. They are met by Ella, who immediately starts complaining about Lucifer's absence, "I miss Lucifer. He was the best hugger. I mean, squirmer on the outside, but warm and fuzzy on the inside." Dan signals her to stop talking about Lucifer in front of Chloe. Chloe thinks she spots Amenadiel at the opposite side of the road, but when she looks back he is gone, and she seems confused. Ella gives them the situation; the murder victim is Ash Corrigan, lead guitarist in the band, Heavy Woolies.

Dan and Chloe arrange to talk to the surviving band members, who all seem think Ash's ex-wife, Courtney, is a suspect. They claim she and Ash were known to fight. Back at the precinct Dan has confirmed the story of Ash's ex-wife being violent; she has a record. But the work is interrupted by an arrival; Lucifer is back. Chloe is at first relieved, then angry, "I was really, really worried about you... Wow. You just...You go AWOL for two weeks, and then you have the nerve to come here and shush me?" Candy then arrives before Lucifer has time to explain anything. Candy shows off her new wedding ring and Lucifer presents her as Candy Morningstar, his wife. Chloe is floored.

Lucifer tells Chloe that he realizes now that he should have asked for time off. Chloe tells Lucifer that it is not about vacation days, but that she thought they were friends, and he can’t simply waltz back into her life and pretend that nothing has changed - not only did he hurt her, but he damaged the trust between them. Chloe walks away, leaving Lucifer alone.

Chloe interrogates Ash's ex-wife, Courtney, while Lucifer and Dan are in the observation room. Chloe empathizes with Courtney, "I completely understand. I was with an immature partner, and it was maddening." Lucifer tells Dan not to take it personally. Dan responds that he does not believe Chloe is talking about him. Lucifer is oblivious. Courtney points Chloe in the direction of the divorce mediator she and Ash used.

Amenadiel and mum, meanwhile, are stalking Lucifer on Wobble, trying to figure out where he has gone. They discover images of Lucifer and Candy and Amenadiel realizes that "Cottoncandy86" is claiming to be married to Lucifer. Mum is horrified.

At the precinct, Dan has confirmed Courtney's alibi, and has looked up the divorce mediator, Anthony Annan. Candy recognizes the photo Dan has of Anthony as a bystander at the crime scene, and points him out in the photos. Candy explains that her profession does not lend itself to remembering many names, so instead she is very good at recognizing faces. Lucifer is delighted, and suggests since there is a band in the case he is the perfect person to work the music angle. Chloe tells him he is not on the case, and he is surprised, asking about their partnership. Chloe responds, "Our partnership ended when you ghosted me, and the entire department. You can't just march back in here like nothing's wrong. You can't just grab what you want when you want....You let me down, Lucifer. I mean, what good is a partner if I can't depend on you? I don't need you anymore."

Lucifer then brings Candy to a therapy session with Linda. Lucifer tells Linda that he tried not to come back to Chloe but he missed...his work. Then complains that Chloe just fired him, "...the Detective and I are quite the crime-fighting duo. I mean, you wouldn't break up Batman and Robin, now, would you?" Candy suggests that he keep showing up anyway, and Linda agrees that is good advice.

Dan approaches the mediator, but Anthony refuses to talk to the police without a warrant. Dan spots Lucifer following him, and Lucifer explains that he is trying to get things back to the way they were. Dan empathizes.

At Chloe's apartment, Lucifer arrives and suggests that he and Candy can go undercover to talk to the mediator, "Detective, the mediator won't talk to you without a warrant. Which is why I so wisely made an appointment for Candy and I this afternoon, see? You need me." Chloe throws the couple out of the apartment.

At the penthouse, Mum is waiting as Lucifer and Candy enter. Lucifer apologizes for not inviting Goddess to the wedding but "we just decided; no enemies." Mum and Candy then arrange to go shopping together so Lucifer's mum can hear all about her son's plans.

Maze points out to Chloe she is is clearly upset with Lucifer, she says he does stupid impulsive things from time to time, but he always comes back around. Maze suggests that Chloe and Lucifer might need a mediator, which gives Chloe an idea. The appointment Lucifer made with Anthony is on, but instead of Candy, it is Chloe dressed as Candy who keeps the appointment. He asks why she wants to divorce Lucifer, and she replies, "Well, I just feel like we're supposed to have a partnership, and it just totally feels like it's not working anymore...the crux of the issue...that would be Lucifer disappearing, and then popping back up with zero explanation and a ditzy bimbo on his arm." When Lucifer tried to explain the figurative and literal hell he'd been through, she said she was the one who almost died, and he agreed that was what he was talking about.

Lucifer then uses his mojo to draw out Anthony's desires. It turns out Anthony wants to become the manager of the band, and wants the band to succeed. He used the money from the divorce between Courtney and Ash to buy the band's records and merchandise to kick start their career.

Meanwhile, mum is out shopping with Candy, trying to figure out what Lucifer is planning. Candy compares her diamond ring to the ones in the window, and says the size of the ring means Lucifer loves her a lot. Mum wonders aloud what they are planning, Candy says she plans to open a juice bar or a tanning salon. Mum wants to know about matricide, but Candy assures her the mattress at the penthouse is in good shape. The goddess later tells Amenadiel that Candy is “a sinister genius...Here I thought this "Candy" was an insipid dullard. But she may be the most formidable opponent I've ever faced…I came away with nothing! Not a single crumb of information about Lucifer's real agenda.”

Back at the precinct, Ella thinks the marks on Ash’s head could be from band mate Marla’s base guitar. Chloe then heads to the club to find Marla, but Lucifer beats her to it. He shows up on stage as one of the acts. Lucifer greets the crowd and dedicates a song to a woman who says she doesn’t need him anymore. “Well, I say she's wrong. And I'm going to prove just what I'm willing to do for our partnership. That's right, rock a sweet '90s jam.” Chloe reacts to him singing to her, embarrassed and pleased, until he says the woman he is looking for is called Marla, who tries to flee. When she is caught and brought to the stage he smiles at Chloe, “See? You need me.”

Back at the station, Ella finds the bass has Ash’s blood on it. She feels the tension between Lucifer and Chloe and is relieved when Amenadiel shows up. He speaks to Lucifer privately, asking why he was watching over Chloe, protecting her, all because she was supposed to mean something to Lucifer. Lucifer agrees she is special, but the feelings she had were not real, and he had to protect her. Amenadiel understands then that Lucifer was protecting Chloe from himself "by holding up a shield made of Candy."

Dan admits that he told Lucifer where Chloe was, because Lucifer helped save her life. Marla, meanwhile, says she didn’t kill Ash, but ran because she thought they were going to bust her for supplying fake IDs. In a video she supplies, they see the drummer, Doug Kennedy, had the bass last. Dan says Chloe should take Lucifer to check it out.

Inside Doug’s apartment, Lucifer takes a call from Candy, and he tells her they're about to catch a killer, when the killer wraps a cord around Lucifer's neck and tells Chloe if she cares about her partner she'll drop her gun. Lucifer throws up his hands, "You may as well just yank the sucker, then, Dougie, 'cause I'm useless to her, you see...the Detective doesn't need me anymore. So come on, do your worst....Go on, go on. Yank like it's your last wank. Or better still, you shoot, Detective. Come on. Two birds, one bullet, what do you say?" Chloe shoots Doug, and Lucifer is released. Chloe checks on him and he claims not a scratch.

Candy shows up at the scene, frantic, and thanks Chloe for saving Lucifer, that his work is too dangerous, but it's all he wants to do. Chloe is skeptical but Candy assures her "Oh, my God, it's 'Detective this,' and 'Detective that.' Working with you means so much to him...Dude's totally messed up. But then, you probably already know that, huh? 'Cause you're kind of the reason why? Didn't you two just go through a super bananas situation? With like, poison? He kept saying how he almost lost you, and it was hell and stuff." It was the first time Chloe was made to realize that she was not the only one traumatized by her near death experience. She then tells Lucifer not to be late to the precinct tomorrow.

Lucifer then goes to his mother’s office and tells her he doesn’t forgive her, but appreciates she did go to Hell for him. Charlotte says she now needs to be honest, too. She wants to get their family back to the Silver City, and reveals that the Flaming Sword is Azrael’s blade and they can use it to go home.

Later that night, Lucifer thanks Candy for playing a great role and allowing a peek into his mothers scheming mind. He tells her to keep the wedding rings since divorce is so expensive. Before she leaves, she asks what was going on with Chloe, and suggests he shouldn’t mess that up. As she is driven off, he says he’s trying not to.
