Meanwhile, Amenadiel deals with a personal health issue."[1]

Plot[]

Pierce, now revealed to be Cain, is still bleeding from the fatal wound Lucifer inflicted to out him. He says he may be immortal, but “I'm still human. I still feel all the pain that comes with death, it's just the wounds heal.” He confirms that he was responsible for Lucifer's kidnapping and dumping in the desert. That the man they knew as the Sinnerman was actually his right hand, but that he had gone rogue, and Cain did not know why.

Lucifer accuses Cain of working with his Father, restoring his wings and taking his Devil face, but Cain says he he would never work with God for any reason. Lucifer threatens to expose him, but Cain reminds him that no one believes he’s the Devil, so who would believe he was Cain?

At their apartment, Chloe finds Maze throwing blades at Trixie’s door, and tells her now they must pay for the damage, but Maze says that she has already paid Trixie to do a new alien drawing to cover the damage, she thinks Chloe is taking out her frustration on her. Chloe admits she is upset that with Lucifer, that she trusted him enough to break the rules for him, but he still went off on his own, and didn’t care enough to tell her what he was going to do. Maze understands she is upset but says she’s never going to change Lucifer, “He is who he is.”

Meanwhile, at a new crime scene, a very subdued Ella is taking pictures. The neighboring homeowners complain that transients have taken over the beach. Dan fills Chloe in, the dead man was a pro surfer, Manny “Moondog” Taylor. Ella, speaking in monosyllables, says it appears he was strangled with a surfboard leash, but not his own. Lucifer arrives, wondering why Chloe had not called. She tells him she chose not to. He then asks for her help investigating a clever and cunning person. She can't believe he wants something more from her, and tells him she will be working without him today. He should go home to be with the person he loves the most, himself.

At Linda's office, Lucifer catches her up on Cain. When Linda asks, Lucifer says Cain is probably dangerous, but the person who can find out – Chloe – is not interested in helping. Linda reminds him that he broke her trust, and he should consider how his actions affect Chloe. Lucifer almost gets it, “So what you're saying is I need to make it all about her for a change.” When Linda agrees, he then says Chloe can then make it all about him. Linda thinks she should have seen that coming.

Back at the precinct, after viewing tape on Moondog in competition, and fighting with surfer, Doug Libby, Charlotte notes that Ella is not being her usual cheerful self. Ella admits that Pierce yelled at her for talking too much, so now she is trying to talk less. As for Pierce, he tells Chloe he has put in for a transfer, that he had come in hopes of changing things for himself, “nothing changes, not for me.”

At the beach, Chloe tries to get a chance to see Doug Libby, but when Lucifer shows up and tells her he plans on making the day about her and informs her he signed her up for the competition so she can get access to Libby, she pauses and says that might actually help, but she turns down the offer of a bikini. She gets into the event and speaks to Libby and spotting blood on his board before Lucifer blows her cover by having registered her as Chloe 'The Detective' Decker. She then takes Libby in. At the precinct she tells Lucifer she knows he doesn't care about the case and is only being helpful so she will help him. Doug then confesses to killing a seal, but did not kill Moondog.

Charlotte intercepts Pierce while he’s getting coffee and asks, “do you take it dark and bitter like your soul?” She then asks if he likes beating up subordinates, and accuses him of being a bully, “If I wasn't on the road to virtue and righteousness, I would crush you like a cockroach...Ella Lopez may be astonishingly perky and optimistic, but she doesn't deserve to have her spirit crushed by anyone... Shame on you.” Pierce takes her dress down under advisement.

Lucifer asks Dan how to make Chloe forgive him, and is given the advice of being thoughtful without getting in her face. Lucifer is gone before Dan stops talking. He then does some digging on the case, and finds a surf gang known as the Orcas whose M.O. Is using surf leashes to choke people to scare them off their turf, and their leader, Wildchild, has a long rap sheet. Dan is then sent to the beach undercover to do some surfing and baiting. Chloe and Pierce listen from the surveillance van. Dan finds the Orcas, and gets into it with them, and when Wildchild pulls out a board leash, he asks if that's how they killed Manny. They had not known Manny was dead and so do a paddle out memorial ceremony for him together.

Lucifer asks Ella what he should do for Chloe and Ella responds harshly, so even Lucifer picks up on the fact she is not herself. She then tells him that Pierce is leaving and this sends him out after Pierce. Lucifer arrives, and pulls Pierce aside. When he then insists Lucifer mojo him, he reveals he wants to die. Lucifer doesn’t understand what that has to do with him. Pierce says it has nothing to do with Lucifer, it's about Chloe, “I've been searching for a way out forever, keeping an eye on every celestial on Earth and what they're doing.... So imagine my surprise when I find out there's a detective who somehow made the Devil bleed. For the first time, I had hope, maybe she could do for me what she did for you.” He had kidnapped Lucifer to get him out of the way, and had been shot because he alerted the suspect he was coming. Lucifer was incensed that he had put Chloe in danger, and Pierce points out that even with Chloe right beside him, he lived.

Chloe loses contact with Dan, so the team runs down to the beach where Chloe realizes they are doing a paddle out ceremony. Dan says he’s trying to find Manny’s killer, but the Orcas say they had nothing to do with his death, they never went to Carbon because the residents block off the beach access. When Dan returns to shore, he says he believes the Orcas, and that someone seems to want to set them up. Lucifer has meanwhile tried to arrange Chloe's files in his own way. When she sees what he has done, she is angry, “Are you that self-absorbed that you don't realize how your actions hurt people? Hurt me?” and tells him she will never help him with his case. He says he no longer needs her help, and she can't imagine why he is still hanging around. “Because this case matters to you, therefore, it matters to me. We're partners, Detective.” She looks at hims and then tells him just to start there next time. When she takes a look at Lucifer's filing, she finds the connection she needs, since all beaches in California are public, someone must have posted signs illegally at Carbon and that someone was cited for posting signs before.

Chloe and Lucifer have set themselves up on the beach in question, chairs, table, champagne, right in front of one of the beachfront houses. The owner storms on to the beach and tells them the beach is private, didn't they see the signs? Chloe fans herself with one, and says they must have missed it. The homeowner then says she will call the police, and Chloe points out the cops now searching her house. Lucifer notes that the police have found a surfboard with a leash, and wants to know her motive. She killed Manny and framed the Orcas because she thought if people were scared enough they would stay away - a means to an end. Chloe places her under arrest, and as she is taken away she turns to Lucifer who has vanished. She sighs, “He is who he is.”

As Pierce packs up his office, he spots Ella in her lab and goes to speak to her. She says she knows she talks a lot but she’s okay with that. She tells him he was rude and unprofessional. He says she’s right, and he says he is sorry, he was in a bad place. She immediately asks if he needs a hug. She then says he’ll miss her.

Out in the garage, as Pierce gets on his bike, Lucifer pulls up. He has decided that his Father gave him his wings back to stop Pierce defying Him, “since my wings ruined your kidnapping plan, it seems I was a means to an end.” He thinks they can get their own back, however, if he fulfills Cain's desire - “if you stay, I will find a way to end your infinite misery, if it's the last thing I do....you've certainly never made a deal with the Devil before, now, have you? What say we change that?” Cain doesn't think he has anything to lose and they shake on it.
