A Priest Walks Into A Bar is the ninth episode of the first season of Lucifer. It aired on March 21, 2016.

Summary[]

A priest seeks out a favor from Lucifer when he suspects an underground drug operation has set up shop at a neighborhood youth center. Lucifer refuses to help. A problem arises, however, when the youth counselor at the center is found dead, and suspicion falls on the priest. Lucifer's plan to expose the priest as a hypocrite, leads to him lending aid despite himself. Meanwhile, Amenadiel meets with Malcolm to discuss the reason he brought him back from Hell. Malcolm manipulates events to keep an eye on Dan.

Plot[]

A pizza delivery man arrives at Lucifer's sex party and is invited in, Lucifer introduces him to a trio of scantily clad Britneys and they head for the Jacuzzi. One invites Lucifer to join them, and he says he will, but he does not.

In a therapy session, Lucifer is confused as to why he did not join in with the Britneys, "three Britneys in a hot tub. Three!" but Linda says he is apparently struggling with an emotional void, that he sounds lonely. When he scoffs and says he is never alone, she thinks he has a lack of genuine friends. Linda points out that being alone and being lonely are two different things. You can be surrounded by people, but if there is no connection, if they are not your friends, there is an emotional void.

Back at the club Maze eagerly points out a man who came to call. A priest, Frank Lawrence, comes to Lux and asks Lucifer to intervene in a drug operation targeting kids, particularly one named Connor, at a youth center, headed by the director Lenny Arietta. Lucifer asks why Father Frank does not ask the police for help, to which Father Frank responds that he already tried that, and they were useless. Lucifer then asks why Father Frank does not ask "his boss," the Almighty, for help. Father Frank responds that he did, and Lucifer assumes God did not answer, however, Father Frank says that he believes God led him to Lucifer. Lucifer scoffs and refuses to help Father Frank, with "a big fat no."

Lucifer talks to Chloe about Father Frank, and he is convinced the priest is hiding something, and he hopes to find evidence to bring the priest down. They arrive at Arietta's office only to find him dead. They question the kids, and one of them mentions Father Frank is obsessed with Connor. At the station, Chloe finds his criminal records, all incidents occurring over 10 years ago, except for a restraining order filed by Arietta a few days before.

Chloe talks to Dan and mentions the kiss they shared, and agree to have dinner together to talk. Malcolm finds Dan and tells him he chose him as his partner, as he suspects Dan shot him and wants to keep an eye on him. He then asks Dan to get him something from evidence. Amenadiel meets Malcolm and urges him to get the job done.

Chloe and Lucifer visits Father Frank's church, and Lucifer dispenses his own brand of confessional advice to a woman contemplating cheating. Father Frank admits to having had a fight with Arietta, however, the woman Lucifer just talked to in confession affirms that Father Frank was listening to her confessions when Arietta was killed. As the three exit the church, a car appears and a gunman open fires on them, without hitting anyone.

Father Frank reveals a voice message threatening him not to interfere with the youth center, and that he knows there is another drug dealer, The Spider, involved, and Connor is already part of the drug business. Lucifer, for his own reasons, brings him to Lux for protection, but not without mocking him with nun-themed strippers. At the bar, Chloe, Lucifer, and Frank have a drink, and Father Frank tells them about a car crash killed his daughter along with Connor's parents, and that is why he joined the priesthood, baffling Lucifer. He reveals he had been a musician and claims to be a better piano player than Lucifer. They head upstairs for him to prove it, and the two play a duet, to the apparent enjoyment of them both.

Chloe gets a lead on The Spider and collects Lucifer for the follow up, she spots the girl who was with Conner at the youth center and suspects she is involved in drug dealing. Connor appears and sees Chloe, pulls out a gun and fires at the ceiling, causing panic. He escapes in the chaos. Traffic cam footage then shows him as the drive by shooter. Father Frank states he still has faith in Connor, again baffling Lucifer. Frank then steps away to take a call.

Dan gives Malcolm the evidence gun, but Malcolm says he is not finished with Dan yet.

Maze tells Lucifer that Father Frank was talking to Conner on the phone before leaving Lux. Chloe and Lucifer finds Frank and Connor at his church with the gun. Eric Doyle, the counselor they interrogated before at the youth center, appears to tell Connor to shoot the priest, revealing himself as The Spider. Connor refuses to shoot Frank. Doyle then raises a weapon to kill Conner and Frank puts himself in the way, protecting the boy, taking the bullet. Chloe then shoots Doyle.

Nearly frantic, Lucifer rushes to Frank's aid, calling him an idiot, he takes his jacket and uses it as a pressure bandage. Frank confesses that he was wondering why God put Lucifer in his path, but now thinks that he got it backwards, Frank believes that God put him in Lucifer's path. Frank tells Lucifer "your father has a plan for you." Lucifer apparently interprets this to mean that Frank knows who he really is. When Frank then dies in Lucifer's arms, he slams Doyle up against the wall in a fury, holding him in a choke hold all the while screaming 'why?' Chloe begs him to stop, that Frank would not want him to kill Doyle. At last, Lucifer lets the man go and waits outside. When Chloe finds him and asks if he's okay, he says he's fine, then says goodnight.

In the penthouse, Lucifer stares angrily at the heavens, he rages against his Father, calling him a "cruel, manipulative Bastard" as a good man like Father Frank still loses despite following the rules, that he knew punishment, and Frank didn't deserve his fate.

Chloe and Dan meet as planned, but each says they have too much on their minds to discuss their issues and say they'll try again later.

Chloe then goes to check on Lucifer, and finds him alone in the penthouse playing "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," the tune Frank had been playing. Lucifer is surprised to see her, and asks if it isn't "a bit late for a new case" to which Chloe responds that she is not there for a case, she is there for Lucifer, that she thought he needed a friend. Lucifer's expression changes to thoughtful, then he smiles and he asks whether she plays. She confesses she does not remember much from her piano lessons, but starts playing "Heart and Soul" he laughs and joins in.

At a diner, Amenadiel threatens to send Malcolm back to hell, and tells him to kill Lucifer.
